Beat the Summer Heat with Moviefriend!

The summer of 2012 has already been monumental for movies. The Dark Knight Rises, Men in Black 3, Marvel’s Avengers, and The Amazing Spider-Man have broken box office records and continue to draw large audiences. Amidst all the options, how does one choose which movie to see?

That’s exactly the question two young men, Michael Tesalona (Manalapan) and Bryan Wong (Old Bridge), seek to answer in their new iPhone application, moviefriend.

“We wanted to create a mobile application that would give recommendations from people you trust – your friends. Hence, moviefriend: the app that helps you discover movies your friends like”, says Michael.

Moviefriend is a mobile application set to launch Sunday, July 29th. The app is the latest of many “discovery” apps that compile data from facebook and delivers it to users in a clear and workable format. More specifically, moviefriend compiles a list of all the movies your friends have liked on facebook. It’s meant to serve as an easy way for you to get recommendations from the people you most trust, those who are already in your social circle. The benefit to using this app, is that it centralizes the wealth of information already available on Facebook that would normally take hours to organize.

When speaking about the app Bryan offered, “It’s amazing how relevant the app is to new releases. I can find out which of my friends like the movies and decide for myself whether I trust their recommendation or not.” Michael added, “I have a lot of friends who work in the entertainment industry and I find their suggestions to be the most valuable”.

There are thousands of apps integrated into facebook but what sets moviefriend apart is that it isn’t seeking to be a social network (like GetGlue) it’s seeking to be a utility based off an existing network. Moviefriend is a way to sort through the data and pull out the most relevant parts. The app then allows you to catalogue that data by creating lists: “to watch”, “favorites”, and “already seen”.

Moviefriend also provides you a link directly to the itunes store for whatever movie you’re interested in. That way you can get a description of the movie and even decide to rent it on the spot.

The app isn’t just about movies Moviefriend also works to bring friends closer together. “So many times moviefriend has been an excuse to reach out to an old friend”, says Michael. “You have so much in common with your friends. This is another resource for finding those commonalities”.

Depending on the success of moviefriend, Bryan and Michael plan on releasing similar apps for books, music, and TV shows. The current version of moviefriend will only be available on the iphone but the creators are not ruling out an andoid version soon.
