Andrew Hu, a 16-year-old student at the Freehold Regional High School District’s Law Enforcement Public Safety Academy at Manalapan High School has attained Eagle Scout status as a member of Troop 155.
Andrew Hu explains his project:
For my Eagle Scout Leadership Project, I planned and implemented “Peace of Grace”, the prayer garden, located at my church, Grace Lutheran Church in Freehold Boro, NJ.
The prayer garden is now a place where parishioners and members of the community can go to have some quiet time reflecting, meditating or praying. The prayer garden and surrounding area include four handcrafted wooden benches (two 4 foot benches and two 8 foot benches), a 15x15 foot brick paver floor and for landscaping, 15 arborvitae trees and 2 Gold Thread Cypress bushes. In the center of it all, is a beautiful cross, handcrafted by Mr. Joe Toth, one of the church’s parishioners. The total cost of this project was funded through 3 garage sales, a stainless steel travel mug fundraiser available to my Troop and Buy-A-Brick Fundraiser available to my congregation, friends and family.
The entire project took 1,089 hours over 14 months to complete. The formal dedication of “Peace of Grace” was held on the afternoon of October 1, 2011. On Sunday, November 20, 2011, the dedication plaque and a photo album documenting the steps that were taken to build the prayer garden were given to the church.
Thank you to members of Troop 155 and Grace Lutheran Church for all your support on my Eagle Leadership Project. My sincere appreciation goes especially to my parents, my sister, my brother, family members, church leaders, scout leaders Mr. & Mrs. Gordon Prochnow, Mr. Kevin Sweetnam, Mr. Paul Grajek, Mr. Thom Ritchie, Mr. & Mrs. Peter Tuozzolo, Mr. & Mrs. Fred Cornell, Mr. & Mrs. John Freire, Mrs. Vickie Friedman and my fellow scouts and friends for all their hard work and dedication.
Just because I am an Eagle Scout doesn’t mean my career as a Scout is over. I expect to stay active in Troop 155 as well as in Order of the Arrow’s Ceremonies Team. I am currently Troop Guide and look forward to working with my fellow scouts during Troop meetings. Receiving the Eagle Scout rank has been one of the most rewarding accomplishments in my life. Although it took me many years to get here, it was all worth the experience and time. I will use my acquired knowledge to benefit myself and others.
Scouting teaches you discipline and perseverance in achieving your goals. Following through with and finishing what you start is very important in everything you do. Being a scout taught me this ... that you should set a goal, strive for it by working hard, staying focused, not taking any shortcuts, staying committed and never giving up no matter what.
