October 2012 Author Talks At Monmouth County Library

Authors abound this October at the Monmouth County Library! There will be author talks for all ages, on topics timely and entertaining, thought-provoking and fun.

Of interest to all Bell Labs alumni: Jon Gertner will read from and discuss his latest book, The Idea Factory: Bell Labs and the Great Age of Innovation on Thursday, October 18 at Library Headquarters in Manalapan.

On Monday, October 22, Colts Neck author Jennifer Pellechio-Lukowiak will speak on her book Does This Outfit Make Me Look Bald? How a Fashionista Fought Breast Cancer with Style. This program will also be held at Library Headquarters in Manalapan.

While the Library’s programs at all branches are free and open to the public, some require advance registration.

Dr. Ludwig Gutmann, MD, was born in Germany and escaped the Nazi rule with his family. The Gutmanns moved to America and Lud was raised in Howell Township. Lud will discuss his personal memoir, Richard Road: Journey from Hate about growing up in Howell on a chicken farm.

Lorraine Leiko Miyahara will speak about her memoir, Internment: Memories of a 13 Year-Old Japanese-American Girl, 1941-1944. Internment is a touching book about a young girl before and during her confinement in a World War II internment camp in Colorado.

Bell Laboratories, the Research and Development arm of AT&T, was one of the world’s premier research labs.   The Idea Factory focuses on the 1920s to the 1980s, before AT&T was broken up by the courts. 

Jon Gertner describes how the culture of Bell Labs led to its many innovations:  lab members worked in multidisciplinary teams, institutional support with the freedom to explore and experiment.  Through his story, Gertner examines such topics as what leads to innovation, how new ideas begin, and how they can be brought to fruition.

Every year more that 11,000 women under the age of 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer.  They do not have the time to be sick, stop their lives or even take the time to care for themselves.  “This book is for them - the women outside the common statistics, like me.  The one thing I know for sure, laughter heals.  I realized long ago, before cancer, that if I didn't laugh, I'd cry. I choose to laugh. I hope you do too.” -Jennifer Pellechio-Lukowiak.

Author Talk: The White Glove by Matthew Gracon

Matthew Gracon chose a different path for his first novel, a mystery. The White Glove is set in a location Gracon knows well, Monmouth and Mercer counties.  But this Monmouth County native chose to tell his story from the point-of-view of a young Vietnamese, American-adopted heroine. 
Come and hear Gracon talk about writing his first novel, choosing a voice, outlining a mystery and planning a series because The White Glove is only the first book in this series centered around amateur sleuth, Janet Ilgetis.

Lovers of Anime, cartoons, manga and graphic novels will not want to miss this program.  Two experienced women authors discuss illustration, animation, and working in the comic book industry. 
Erica Schultz  -  writer and co-creator of the original comic book series, M3. She has written a four- issue Judo Girl mini series and a Venus & Valkyrie one shot for Bluewater Comics. She has also provided artistic support on mini-series' such as Batman: Odyssey, New Avengers 16.1, Blood, and the Astonishing X-Men motion comic Gifted.
Mina Sanwald - an illustrator & animator based out of New York.  She is credited in two animated shorts from Plymptoon, the Weird Al music video TMZ and the restored version of Winsor McCay's Flying House.
