Boy Involved In Long Branch Sand Collapse Dies in Hospital

Oakhurst boy was pronounced dead at 1:34 p.m.

The 12-year-old Oakhurst boy whose sand tunnel collapsed on him on Tuesday afternoon has died at Monmouth Medical Center.

Long Branch Police Capt. Jason Roebuck confirmed the boy was pronounced dead at 1:34 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

His name has not been released at this time.

The boy was apparently digging a large tunnel under the sand on the beach near the Great Lawn shortly after 3 p.m. when it collapsed on him.

The boy was with his mother and 10-year-old brother, who tried to dig him out with the help of lifeguards. Lifeguards performed CPR until an ambulance took him to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was placed in pediatric intensive care overnight.

Sad story, I feel horrible for his mother. I can't imagine what she is going through, too much heartache to imagine.

awful, awful, awful...all kids do this type of stuff...my thoughts are with the family; especially mom and brother who probably were frantically trying to dig the poor boy out. My kids do this all the time..no more!

I'm curious -- The Photo shows the Lifeguard Stand right beside this Hole.....did they move the Guard Stand to prevent other people from falling into the abyss ??

Or was the boy digging right next to the Stand ??

My thoughts go out to the family. What a sad way to pass away...kids doing kid things. This is the 3rd time I've heard of this type of death. Rest in peace kiddo...

Awful, rest in peace little Angel. Prayers are with this family to be strong through the most difficult time of their lives.
