Fire in Covered Bridge Complex

A fire broke out in an apartment complex off Route 9 this morning, sending two firefighters to the hospital.

A sudden fire broke out in an apartment building off Route 9 in Manalapan early Monday morning. The fire is believed to have originated in unit D of building 112 in the Covered Bridge Complex on Amberly Drive, where it spread rapidly to the other connecting units, according to a press release issued by Lt. Michael Fountain. 

Police received the call at 8:48 a.m. According to Fountain, everyone was evacuated and there were no injuries reported by residents. However, two firefighters have been transported to a nearby hospital. The extent of their injuries are not currently known.

According to APP.com, the fire destroyed a total of eight units: four by fire and nother four by smoke, water, and minor fire damage.

The fire is under investigation by Monmouth County Fire Marshal Rick Hogan and Manalapan Police Department Officer Jean Letts and Detective Reginals Grant.

"Preliminary investigation indicated that the fire started as a result of being struck by lightning," Fountain said in the release.
