Louis Moreto Named Police Chief

Moreto has served as acting chief of the Manalapan Police Department since January 2011.

A year after being named acting chief of police, Louis Moreto has been tapped to lead the .

Manalapan Township Committee unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday naming Moreto, 46, police chief at an annual salary of $165,573. The salary will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2012, according to Township Attorney Roger McLaughlin. The acting chief received $154,036 in 2010, state pension data indicates.

Moreto was not in attendance at Wednesday night’s meeting at the municipal building. McLaughlin said he did not anticipate an official swearing in ceremony for Moreto, who had taken the oath of office as acting chief in January 2011.

Moreto has served in the Manalapan Police Department for over 25 years, previously commanding each of the department’s three divisions. He replaced former Police Chief Stuart Brown, who retired in December 2010 after 30 years with the department.

According to the Asbury Park Press, Moreto will be retiring from the Manalapan Police on May 1 of this year.
