UPDATE: Man on Run in Manalapan Still at Large, Identity Known

The man stole a vehicle in Monroe which was later recovered in Manalapan Township.

UPDATE, Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m.:

Manalapan Township Police Chief Chris Marsala has confirmed that the identity of the man who assaulted a Florence police officer and stole a motor vehicle is known. The suspect is a 27-year-old white man who is 5'7", 160 lbs., with blonde hair and hazel eyes.

When a Monroe police officer attempted to stop the car in his Township the pursuit began. The stolen vehicle was later located in the New Beginning development a short time later by an Englishtown police officer, Marsala said.

Monroe police requested the involvement of the New Jersey State Police Department and they provided aerial and K9 support in pursuit of the man.

Police believed the suspect somewhere within a large wooded area between Iron Ore Road, Mt. Vernon Road, and Dey Grove Road in Manalapan. At around 4 p.m., a resident reported that she saw a man fitting the description of the subject behind her McCafferty Road home, according to police. Additional sightings of the man on McCafferty Road were made as well as some sightings as far away as Millhurst Road.

At around 6 p.m. on Wednesday the New Jersey State Police stopped the sue of air and ground units, according to Marsala. Manalapan Police also assisted in the search of the man, and he is currently still at large; there are no investigations pending, Marsala said.

"Manalapan Police will remain in the area during overnight hours," Marsala said. "Residents are advised to be vigilant as always and immediately report any suspicious activity or persons."

Deputy Mayor Jordan Maskowitz, the liaison to the Manalapan Police Department, said that Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School was immediately notified of the situation after police were aware of the search.

Maskowitz also said that the Manalapan police believe the man has stolen another car and is no longer in the area.

ORIGINAL STORY POSTED AT 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27:

A man is on the run from police after assaulting a Florence police officer Wednesday morning, police said.

The man was seen in a stolen motor vehicle in Monroe Township at around 10:30 a.m. and was heading into Manalapan Township. The stolen car was later found in a residential area of Manalapan, police indicated. According to a resident, the car was located and towed away from New Beginnings Crossing in Englishtown.

Currently the New Jersey State Police and Manalapan, Monroe and Englishtown police departments are searching for the man in the area. A foot search with K9 units from the New Jersey State Police is being conducted in the area; the New Jersey State Police are also assisting with their aviation unit, according to Captain Michael Fountain of the Manalapan Police Department.

New Jersey State Police spokesman Sgt. Adam Grossman said that the state police are merely helping with the manhunt with their K9 and aviation unit and that this is not their investigation.

This is an ongoing investigation. More information will be updated to this story as it becomes available.

This guy dumped this stolen car about 1/4 mile from my house. Cops in my back yard on Tracy Station Rd scanning the woods when I got home from work because they followed his footprints into the woods just 200 yards from my propertyline. Cops from Monroe, Manalapan, Englishtown and State Police helicopters flying over for hours, k9s on the ground. Wouldn't you think with the thousands and thousands of dollars in resources being spent looking for this guy, they would have relayed this info to NJ channel 12 to televise what was going on so the residents could be made aware. I called NJ 12 this evening and they apparently knew about it and when I asked why they haven't televised this on the news, the guy had no answer for me. What the hell is going on here????? If this guy would steal a car and assault a cop, don't you think he'd break into your house or even assault you in order to hide and escape capture!!! Maybe even worse if he is armed??? Where the hell is the communication around her letting the residents know what's going on so they can be on the lookout. DISGUSTED!!!

Even if the school was not notified, shouldn't the bus drivers have had the forthought to call into transpotation to see if they should let the kids off the bus. 20 policemen swarming the area with k-9 dogs is a warning sign.

Monroe PD told me as of five minutes ago, they called are not actively in search for him anymore because Manalapan has called off the search. They aren't going to tell you now or later. They only tell news reporters when they are being glorified but if they have to explain what is happening right now, it'll show how sometimes even law enforcers mess up.. But now this is putting dozens to hundreds of lives potentially in danger.. But they gave up, until someone is a victim or witness to report him again.

I received NO warning from Township officials about this, and it received no media coverage. Patch had an article well before Asbury Park Press. I came home from a mid-week church service at 11PM to a dark house, and there were no signs in the area of Police patrol. Manalapan really dropped the ball with this one! I am sad that I expected better from my home-town. I intend to place a call into the mayors office about this and I encourage you all to do the same! We have a right to be informed by our local authorities- if it weren't for everyone talking about this, would we even know? Shame on Manalapan

I do blame the police for "what they didnt say" As a COMMUNITY and tax payer we have a right to know when a fugitive is running through our neighborhoods, if he attacked a police officer why wouldnt they assume we shouldnt be alerted. I am out walking my dog at all hours, my 14 year old is sometimes hanging in the neigborhood with friends and now I find out this trash was in my development. Not Cool In the time it took me to write this post, I have seen three Manalapan police cars in my development, does that mean he is possibly close by? I guess the sun is up so the police can start working again.

Regarding alerts by the local police. Verizon has the ability to send alert messages to cell phones in any area. Doesn't matter if you are passing through or from there. They did it in Manhattan prior that last snow storm coming through. Starts with that annoying emergency alert sound used on TV. Then a text message comes through with info. Everyone in my NYC office got the alert msg on their smart phone. It was a surprise to all of us. Apparently, a dangerous individual is not as significant as a snow storm. As residents, we should contact the mayor's office and ask why this sort of system is not in use in our area. Our kids walk from school buses to home and they would be at significant risk.. to say the least.

"do not believe heresay..or forrums until it is publically known"

While no one should shout FIRE in a crowded theater, when critical information is not provided to residents at risk, that's a mistake. And beating up on the PD is not the answer, but pressuring to do better will help protect everyone. What I don't want to read about in a forum is that an person was injured or killed because they encountered a dangerous person while walking their dog. Luckily, that didn't happen, but this guy assaulted a police officer. He had a lot to lose by be sighted by a resident. Any person seeing him would be at risk. We need to learn from this and do better. And working with the PD is a good start. But giving them a pass is not.

Support each other, Support your community and Support the Police Department...they have a very hard task of pleasing everybody, if they don't act aggressive enough...people complain, if they act too aggressive, people complain also. Put yourselves in their shoes and think of what legal and ethical rules they must keep while searching for this scum. Instead of critizing their actions, look at the police departments up north like Newark...so stop your whining and be aware of your surroundings, lock your doors, don't go out late at night walking your 2lb dog....Use common sense and stop so damn sensitive.

Wow US Marine, you got some mouth on you. So I guess at 4:00 pm when my daughter and her friends were walking around the neighborhood yesterday when some jerk was eluding the police that was ok. Or the senior citizen that takes a walk everyday at 4:00 shouldnt have been alerted. This isnt Newark so I should be able to go outside at 11:00 pm to walk my 100 lb dog. If we would have known maybe i would have been able to support my community and go next door and make sure my elderly neighbor is aware. So the Super of Schools in Manalapan can leave us parents a voicemail saying there is too much bullying in the schools but a fugitive running through back yards doesnt warrant a call. No one is being sensitive, this is common sense. Hey some jerk just beat up a cop, went on a high speed chase and is running through the woods in broad daylight, maybe would have grabbed a kid playing ball, or someone going to check their mail, they should act aggressive in this situation.

What it all comes down to is Manalapan did a poor job in relaying to its community the potential danger that was going on. Someone posted what should they have stopped and called you and you should just lock yourself in your house. Yes, there should have been a system to alert everyone and why would I lock myself in my house if I was not aware of what was going on. Just like the sex offenders that live in Manalapan, when I called the police to inquire why werent residents in that area where they live alerted to the fact that there are two Megan Law offenders in the area, their response, their level doesnt warrant the public to be notified, so when would I be notified, their response when they reach the next level. My response are you kidding me??? Small town police force.

Be happy they were out there doing what they were supposed to and keeping you safe from harm instead of complaining. They are not going to compromise a police investigation by telling the community everything they know… they are trained to do their jobs, let them do it. If you think you can go out there and do a better job then they do on a daily basis, I challenge you to try…

There are not enough cops Patricia & they were looking for that pos. the township committee should of informed everyone. They are the reason we do not have enough police in this town. I don't know how they could of informed people when they were trying to track him down to keep you and your family safe. They can only do so much. I think people should really go to the next meeting and ask where the money is going to since it is not to protect the community. This town keeps growing and we have less police and the crime rate is up. Make any sense to you?

I spoke with the Mayor personally and she said that it was the Chief's call not to inform the residents and lock down the schools. He felt the situation did not warrant such action as the person they were pursuing was not armed and dangerous. She did go on to say that the next time she will use the reverse 911 regardless of what the chief advises if she feels it is warranted.
