Manalapan-Englishtown K-8 Adds Days Lost from Sandy

Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21) and President’s Day (Feb. 18) will now be open for school within the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School district.

Like the Freehold Regional High School District, the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District (MERS) must make-up days lost during the time off taken as a result of Hurricane Sandy.

Currently, Governor Chris Christie and the Department of Education have no intention of waiving the 180-day requirement for school’s calendars causing districts to scramble to make up lost days.

The MERS Board of Education approved an amended calendar at their Tuesday night meeting which turns two originally scheduled days off into regular school days. Martin Luther King Day (Jan. 21) and President’s Day (Feb. 18) will now be open for school within the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School district.

After discussing the possibility of taking some days off of spring break, the Board decided to adhere to the original calendar which stipulates that any additional days missed due to inclement weather would be tacked on to the end of the school year.

As of right now the 2012-2013 school calendar ends on Wednesday, June 26. However, the potential of more days added in June exists if snow days are taken this winter.

Since those 2 days were only for basically 3 day weekends, we can pretty much say it won't be a problem. Those that still need it off will have to request it in time and they will have the substitutes needed.

But since you obviously can't let the matter go, you should attend the next BOE meeting and ask Mr Marciante himself and see what they say.

He has stated there will be no school in July (umm...someone else stated that before too, oh yes, it was me!!). So for snow days, the last two days of June, and possibly Spring Break which has 5 days (the HS will be using m-th of spring break for snow days).

If you are looking for some sort of guarantee of what teachers and bus drivers are going to do, don';t hold your breath, since no one can provide that for you.

They better get those kids air conditions! They are gonna melt in school. You would think that with all the taxes we pay in Manalapan that the schools would be air conditioned!!

When you were a kid, were your schools air-conditioned? I'll also bet that you weren't allowed to wear shorts, tank tops and sneakers either. They're kids. They'll manage. Stop molly-coddling our kids or we will have nothing but wooses when they are adults.

They don't need air conditioners! Geez...if your child needs it for medical reasons, the get a doctors note and switch to Wemrock. They won't melt...they will be hot and sweat, and they will change the days to 1/2 instead of full if need be. I never had AC growing up, and neither did any of my schools. And my schools were 2 - 3 floors not one level only. Kids are tough stop molly coddling them!

Besides if they need those last 2 days in June, what difference do those last 2 days matter vs the rest of the month of June? Would you rather they not go to school in June at all and go instead in August?? Pick your poison.

We can all sit here and make arguments one way or the other but the bottom line is Christie should have made an executive decision to reduce the amount of days to 175 this year. It would solve this issue for the majority of the districts in our state adn still keep our kids safe. Right now the rest of this year is in flux becuase we do not know how many snow days we will need. What I am afraid of is that school will not be cancelled for days that the probably should be. In past years schools have closed for snow days that we all know probably know weren't necessary. My hope is that they dont reverse course and send kids out in dangerous conditions. By eliminating 5 days from the calender we can solve this. This is what is being done in NY.

I agree, Christie should have done that, as they did in NY. If we have a bad winter, he may have to, or should.

You are all for less school, and half days in the summer. You call that school? I wish I was your kid. I'm done with you. You keep defending a man who has blatently showed favoritism toward certain schools and parents in the district (I had proof and the BOE did nothing!). He did not listen to the Governor. He did not listen to the commissionor of education. He lied (or hid the facts) to the parents. He held a meeting to change the calendar after this without any communication to the parents so we could attend. You want to be on his side, enjoy. Marry him if you want. I'm done with you.

Christie has done the right thing. School is 180 days. If anything it should be more, not less. What he did do wrong is not demanding that schools open. NO CONFERENCE - SCHOOLS OPEN. And he should change the conference in the first place. Either 1 - Make it mandatory (none of this on vacation crap). 2 - Change it to be over the summer or on a weekend (why should the kids miss school for it) I know of no other profession where workers can schedule a conference, get paid for the day and go to Disney World instead.

LOL, where am I all for less school? I wouldn't complain if my kids had school all year round! And I am not for 1/2 days in the summer..that is what they schools do when they feel it is too hot. I went to school in the heat, I have no problems if my kids do. I understand the importance of a quality education, believe me I have for for that for all my kids for 25 years. I wish the education here was better then it was.
Since the man as you call him, Mr. Marciante, I feel is doing the best he can. Is he great, no, but he is better then what they are dealing with over at FRHSD. But again, it isn't just him, it is the BOE also. More then one person to blame here. I am not in his shoes in charge of the several thousand children he had to get safely to school, and we are not the only district in NJ that didn't have school for 2 weeks. So I will let this one go.
You obviously have a grudge against the man. What favoritisn is showing towards certain schools and parents? I am going to guess that you are a parent at Milford and are upset about the late start time there??
If you really want to know about a meeting, that everyone knew was going to happen very quickly (was it open to the public), then you should have made it your business to call and find out when it was happening.

Why should teachers give up a weekend or their summer (when most work another job since t hey are paid enough as teachers)? If you have an issue with the conf. take it up with the NJEA.

Why would you bring Milford up in this conversation? It must be a Milford parent because someone is ticked at our superintendent? Not cool.. Even though they have every right to be ticked at him because he flat out lied to them.

I'm done with this thread. Right or not I feel he did not act as he should have. Decisions were made too quickly, for the wrong reasons and other reasons were given too late. If you don't want to agree with me, you don't have to.
But on the record....I am NOT a Milford parent. Other parents at others schools also have issues with him. Milford is not the only ones who have reasons to be ticked. Maybe there is a pattern that needs to be addressed? Some people might want to open their eyes a bit more.
