Obituary: Fr. Malachy Higgiston, 88

Father Higgiston was the weekend assistant at St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church in Manalapan for 21 years.

Father Malachy Higgiston, 88, of Cherry Hill, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2011, at Virtua West Hospital, Voorhees. Born in Belfast, Ireland on October 28, 1923, he became a U.S. citizen in 1953. He was Ordained on December 8, 1956. He was a professor at St. Pius X Seminary in Blackwood, NJ.

He was a U.S. Army veteran Lieutenant Colonel retiring in 1988 after 22 years of honorable service as Military Chaplain serving in Vietnam. Father Malachy received his Masters in Theater from New York University in 1991. Father then became the weekend assistant from 1989-2010 to , Manalapan. Father Malachy was a member of the Volantus Dei Institute, serving to bring to our all-too-often materialistic world and evangelical flavor by living their total consecration to God in the world.

Father Higgiston was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Dennis, and a brother and sister. He is survived by many loving friends including Leon Boddie, the Buckman family, Deacon Joseph Izzo, Monsignor Ed Alleyne, Father John Bambrick, Maureen Pohl and Patricia and Jim Duffy.

Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, Nov. 18, from 4 p.m. until the Mass of Christ The High Priest is celebrated at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. until his Funeral Liturgy is celebrated at 11 a.m., at , Manalapan. A repast will follow the Mass. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Toms River. Arrangements are under the direction of the, Manalapan.
