As Hurricane Irene looms closer, the NJ Farm Bureau has issued a hurricane preparedness checklist for farms and farm animals.

A news release from the NJFB contains details about the County Animal Rescue Team available in each county, serving as first responders to animals in distress during emergencies.

Tips for protecting farmland and livestock:

• Keep chemicals and non-edible feed in a separate area from livestock food, to prevent mixing in case of a spill or damage to containers or sheds.
• Scope out the best places for animals on your property, where they have the best chance of being free from flying debris, heavy winds and rain.
• Be prepared with alternate power sources and alternate clean-water sources.
• Scope out evacuation shelter for your livestock in advance, and have a plan to take them to places such as private stables, racetracks, fair grounds or other private farms.
• Make sure animals are tagged with the owner’s name, address and contact information.
• Keep medical papers and vaccinations up to date and in a safe place.
• Keep transportation for livestock fueled and maintained.
• Check your insurance coverage for your property and animals.
