Rabid Skunk Discovered in Manalapan

The Health Department wants to advise residents to stay away from wildlife.

The and Western Monmouth Animal Control are reporting that a rabid skunk was found in the township near Tennent and Craig Roads.

The skunk was first reported on Sunday, April 15 and later found dead on Monday, April 16, but the animal tested positive for rabies. According to the Health Department, no person or domestic animal is known to be attacked by the rabid skunk.

Skunks are nocturnal creatures and very common in Monmouth County. The solitary mammals typically keep their distance from humans and vice versa due to the noxious odor they secrete from their anal glands as a defense mechanism.

Nevertheless, the Health Department wants to take this opportunity to remind residents and their children to keep away from wild animals and avoid contact with any wildlife.

If contact is made with a wild animal, please contact Animal Control and health authorities so that a proper rabies risk assessment can be made as soon as possible.
