Bamboozled! (But Chaperoned)

Looking to avoid the mosh pits, a mom prepares for mega music festival with four teens

Like any good mom, I wanted to give my 15-year-old daughter something she really wanted for her birthday. So what did she want to do more than anything else this weekend to celebrate? Maybe a Broadway show? A Knicks game? A day at a spa? A trip to the beach? She wanted to go to the beach all right - to Bamboozle, the three-day music festival at Asbury Park that is expected to draw 90,000 concertgoers down the shore over the weekend. A few months ago, a concert on the beach sounded like a fun and reasonable thing to do – at least one day of it – so I let her pick a day, and I offered to drive and chaperone. I didn’t really think too much about what I was getting myself into. Now it’s here, and I’m getting bulletins about traffic and how to …

Manalapan and Englishtown Residents to Perform in Brookdale's 'Reluctant Dragon'

Kids under 12 get free entry to this production and BCC is offering free tickets to schools.

When the Brookdale Community College Theater Department presents The Reluctant Dragon this month, it will be with cast of local thespians, including Andrew Micolleti of Englishtown, who will be playing Grimsby, and Chelsea Demaio of Manalapan, who will be a part of the chorus. According to Brookdale, this magical, humorous story is about friendship and follows the unlikely friendship between a dragon and a young boy. Sydney is not your typical dragon as he prefers to spend his time writing poetry and doing watercolor portraits. Sydney decides to settle in the town of Guildemere where the townspeople decide to blame their dying crops and sour milk on the dragon. One boy, Glaston, however, befriends Sydney. The townspeople believe the dragon…

Police Issue Statement on New Jersey 'American Idol' Star's Local Charges

Jermaine Jones tweets his departure amid allegations he lied to producers—and one of those lies allegedly involves Gloucester Township police.

Pine Hill native Jermaine Jones’ rising star crashed today as the American Idol contestant learned he’d be thrown off the singing competition. TMZ first reported that Jones would be kicked off Idol for concealing past arrests and active warrants. TMZ reports Jones gave police fake names in two incidents. Gloucester Township Police have confirmed Jones was arrested here in the township on two occasions in 2011. Jones was a passenger in a car pulled over and told police his name was Kareem Watkins in the November 2011 incident, the gossip site says. Township police on Wednesday confirmed that information, saying the arrest occurred on Hickstown Road, but did not disclose the name Jones allegedly provided investigating officers. Gloucester …

Made in Monmouth Sale Attracts Small Manufacturers

Is that your neighbor on the vendor list? Tell us whose product you already love.

Patch is a big fan of home-grown products. One of our favorites is Jersey Girl Honey produced by beekeeper Jill Pegosh of Oceanport. Pegosh's sweet wildflower honey is one of this little borough's best kept secrets. Production is small and unadvertised, so when we're lucky, we snap up a jar through our organic co-op connection. Our sticky supply has run low, so we were delighted when we saw Jersey Girl Honey listed among the vendors of the upcoming Made in Monmouth event coming to Monmouth University later this month. The county-sponsored event will bring vendors of all kinds together to display their wares, free of charge, for residents to try and buy. At last count, there were 57 vendors signed up for the March 31 event. But Jersey Girl …

Is the Best Young Singer in America from New Jersey?

Three singers who grew up in the Garden State are among the finalists on 'The Voice' and 'American Idol.'

Is the best young singer in the nation from New Jersey? Three Garden State natives are among the finalists competing nationally on two separate singing competitions, NBC's The Voice and Fox's American Idol. Former Kinnelon resident Elise Testone came close to elimination Thursday night on American Idol, finishing in the bottom two slots when all of the votes from viewers of the program were tallied. But the three Idol judges, singers Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler and music producer Randy Jackson, decided to keep her on the show and send fellow contestant Jeremy Rosado home. Testone is a 2001 graduate of Kinnelon High School who went to college in North Carolina and remained there after graduation. Although she's been forbidden from …
