Acting Governor Kim Guadagno Continues Month-Long Agribusiness Tour at Comarco Products in Camden

Trenton, NJ – Recognizing the vital role New Jersey’s food product companies are playing in the New Jersey Comeback, Acting Governor Kim Guadagno today visited Comarco Products in Camden to get a first-hand look at the firm’s food processing operation. Comarco Products provide America’s restaurateurs and institutions with ‘Jersey Fresh’ eggplant products and grilled and fire-roasted vegetables, as well as prepared sausage, peppers and onion meals. The company also produces ‘Sauceables,’ which are frozen pellets of marinara, alfredo, butter and creamy butter sauces. In addition, Comarco custom manufactures restaurants’ specialty sauces.

“Food and agriculture is essential to our state’s economy as our third largest industry, only behind pharmaceuticals and tourism. Agribusiness brings billions of dollars in revenue to the state and provides good-paying jobs for our families,” said Acting Governor Guadagno. “The growth of companies like Comarco is proof that New Jersey provides a strong and improving environment to locate and grow a business. Businesses in New Jersey can have the confidence that the Christie Administration will continue taking every possible step to strengthen New Jersey’s climate for job creation, business growth and investment.”

The company purchased the current building and site located in Camden in 1989. Since that time, they expanded the plant on five different occasions and have made provisions for future expansions.

Comarco’s eggplant products feature ‘Jersey Fresh’ eggplant thanks to a connection made by the Department of Agriculture between the company and Vineland eggplant farmer Kevin Flaim. The department connected Comarco with Vineland grower Kevin Flaim of Flaim Farms, a large producer of eggplant and other vegetables to supply some of the 6.5 million pounds of eggplant Comarco processes each year. In addition, Comarco is participating in the New Jersey Department of Agriculture’s efforts to bring more Jersey Fresh products into school meals through the Farm to School Program. In fact, the company’s Jersey eggplant rollatini has been selected for use in school lunches.

“Comarco Products is proud to partake in these partnerships as it is a win-win-win for all parties, including the employees of Comarco,” said Comarco President Tom Hoversen. “More than 80 percent of Comarco employees are Camden City residents.”

New Jersey produces more than 100 kinds of fruits and vegetables and ranks among the nation’s largest producers of blueberries, cranberries, peaches, tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, snap beans, spinach, and squash. The state’s 10,300 farms generated sales of about $1.1 billion in 2011. This includes nursery and greenhouse plants, sod, fruits and vegetables, field crops, equine, poultry and eggs, and dairy.

The New Jersey Partnership for Action (PFA) supports the vital role business plays in advancing the state’s economy and creating jobs. Led by Lt. Governor Guadagno, the PFA is a three-pronged public-private approach to economic development and the starting point for all initiatives, policies, and efforts to grow New Jersey’s economy and create quality, sustainable jobs in our communities.  The three elements of the PFA include the Business Action Center, reporting directly to the Lt. Governor and providing the business community with a single point of contact, applying a proactive, customer-service approach to businesses’ interactions with State government; the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, serving as the state’s “bank for business”; and Choose New Jersey, an independently funded and operated 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation created to encourage and nurture economic growth throughout New Jersey.

Businesses considering a move or in need of assistance are encouraged to call New Jersey’s Business Action Center at (866) 534-7789 or visit the State’s Business Portal at www.newjerseybusiness.gov.

A full eight words without a spelling or grammatical error. Did your masters finally buy you a spell checker for your typewriter? And in what universe do people have spelling teachers? Maybe in the New Jersey public school system, huh?
BTW, YAMMBY, maybe you don't know it but many of our educators think spelling accuracy is outmoded and it's more important that the student just get his or her point across and feel good doing it. Self-esteem is kind of like gold and ammunition, you can't ever have too much of it.

Why should they learn English? It might cost them their welfare check.

I repeat myself:

According to the Washington Times 43% of immigrants in this country 20 or more years collect welfare. That sure blows the argument that illegals contribute and get nothing in return. The apologists for illegals have to come up with another argument.

I can't even believe we have to have this conversation! This is America, and our language is English. While it takes time and money to learn a language, some people have been here for generations and still haven't taken the time to learn. Why? Because we cater to them and put signs in Spanish and English. Funky: Have you ever considered that every single other immigrant group took the time to learn English? That no public signs appear (for the most part) in any other language than Spanish? In what twisted world does someone come to this country and EXPECT to be able to speak their own language, and, beyond that, be spoken to in their native language outside of one's family and ethnic community?! No other group needed "assimilation" assistance. In fact, when a lot of ethnic groups came here, they were discriminated against, barred from living in certain areas, and had to learn English from their children. Alas, they learned! Somehow, working in sweatshops and living in slums of NY, they learned! And our daily lives ARE impacted by people not speaking not only my language, but the language of our country... You know, when the McDonald's cashier can't even take my order, when I deal with clients who can't even tell me one sentence in English, when people come into my or someone else's place of work and expect them to speak Spanish. Plus, I feel like I'm living in a foreign country in my own hometown. So yes, it does impact life. And learning English is what is expected. Do it.

Funky Monkey Banana Junkie

10:02 am on Thursday, August 9, 2012

Eyeballs: Learning English takes time. Can we agree on that? I'm going to assume you will agree. Bearing that in mind, helping immigrants assimilate to American life through multi-lingual signage is essential then, no? Not only does it help these newcomers find their way, it's also just a welcoming thing to do. I just don't understand how Diane's life is seriously impacted by seeing Spanish language used on billboards or elsewhere.

Everyone who lives in the United States, except for Native Americans, is an immigrant. That's why the people who are indiginous to this country are called "native" and everyone else is not, because everyone else is an immigrant. English is not "our" language. Most countries who have an "official" language use the INDIGENOUS language of the original people. Perhaps we should be speaking a Native American language, because those were the indigenous people here. And with regard to jobs,it would be a challenge to find one account of anyone who lost out on a job because an illegal person took it. Are Americans lining up to pick blueberries and potatoes for less than minimum wage? No, they are not. In general, Americans want big screen tvs and luxury vehicles and are not willing to work for less than minimum wage. Americans want to be able to stuff their faces with food in fancy restaurants cooked by illegal people and get their roofs fixed for cheap and then turn around and be upset that illegal people are here. Americans want to buy goods and services for cheap which were produced by illegal people who are trying to keep their babies and sick mothers alive for another day. If Americans lost all the illegals today, what would they eat or complain about?

How is that different from any other immigrants? I’m 3rd generation German, and no nothing about the German language. I have a good friend who is first generation Russian. "The film "A Day Without a Mexican" was made in 2004. No Mexicans -- or Colombians or Argentines or Guatemalans or Panamanians, for that matter -- have mysteriously disappeared from our country. In the long run, a day without Mexicans would deal a devastating blow not just to California, but to the U.S. economy. Hmm maybe some of those jobs would be given to Americans once employers actually had to pay their workers a fair wage on the books. Just a thought. And English is our unofficial, official language. While we don't have one on the books, we are not like China in that we have multiple languages being spoken and accepted. English is the standard, go-to language that we speak and it has been that way since our country's inception. (Also, Native Americans were not the start of our country, Puritan settlers actually began the United States of America, if you want to get technical, and their native tongue is English. Native Americans had little or nothing to do with the formation of our country, other than having to be pushed out of their land by eager Americans.) And yes, everyone else is an immigrant, including myself. Yet my family learned English, just like the Germans, Russians, Chinese, Polish, Indian, etc. AND, finally, how is it fair that illegals are allowed to remain here while plenty of their own people are waiting on lines to get green cards and citizenship and obtain citizenship legally? How is THAT fair? Additionally, I fully support buying American-made products and will pay more when they are available because I abhor the direction in which our country is going. So, no, not all Americans are lazy and want big screen TV's and labor for cheap.

@Ric: Please spare me the nonsense about welfare. Since Clinton signed that punitive draconian welfare bill in 1996, the welfare rolls have been reduced by 60%. Poverty is increasing in this country, more than 25% of US kids live in poverty, the highest of any major developed industrialized democracy. If private companies decide to offer a Spanish choice on their phone menus, complain to the private corporations, that has nothing to do with the government. @Ric: The "Center For Immigration Studies", the organization which released the report cited by the Washington Post about immigrants on welfare, is not an official or governmental organization. It's a non-profit started by a private citizen for the purpose of reducing immigration. The organization also gives awards to journalists who cover this issue. They've been accused of having ties to white supremacy organizations. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center- "CIS presents itself as a scholarly think tank that produces serious immigration studies meant to serve 'the broad national interest.' But the reality is that CIS has never found any aspect of immigration that it liked, and it has frequently manipulated data to achieve the results it seeks." So, when the results seem as fishy as the numbers in this Washington Post article, look into who is behind the study. The results are almost always the same. Unless the study was released by the government or under very strict controls, the study will reflect the agenda of the organization. After researching the issue, I conclude the numbers in the Washington Post article may be falsely inflated.

Rebecca, thanks for your advice, you raise some very interesting points. But I feel the money immigrants are getting from welfare is coming out of funds allocated to help our own citizens who desperately and actually deserve welfare or other social services. It is not our responsibility to care for citizens of other countries. Funding to help the American poor is drying up. Last month NJ Medicaid stopped paying for deductibles unpaid by Medicare. I know because it now cost one of my relatives $20 a month more for his prescriptions.

You are right that statistics can be manipulated by private citizens including both you and me, as well as by political, "official or governmental organizations" and that includes the Southern Poverty Law Center, for which I used to donate money. (I dropped them because the aggressive appeals for donations they sent me were very left wing propaganda.)

As far as CIS, even if their percentages are off a percent or three, the bottom line is giving any immigrant getting welfare is morally wrong because the money is being taken from our own citizens who need welfare or other social services.

George- you're right, no one is better than anyone else. That's why legal immigration is the only thing that should ever be acceptable. How is it fair that some people can break the rules but not have any repercussions while others wait years for their citizenship or green cards? Why are those people any better, why do they deserve that special privilege of being able to do whatever they want? It is my philosophy that when you come to this country, you work hard and do the best you can for your family, try to be an American, and treat your neighbor with respect and compassion. Clearly that is not something you can comprehend, thinking that opposing illegal immigration means I think they are subhumans. In fact, I think they are only taking away opportunities from others that I think those others deserve. Before you stereotype, take a second to listen. The difference between Ellis Island immigrants and illegals is that those first immigrants had to do so legally, had to speak the language, and had to make due with barely any support from the government. Somehow, they all made it. Your rants on the right wing are also horribly ignorant, but I'm going to choose to ignore them because it is clearly a sign of inferior intelligence.

Here's the thing Eyeballs, I don't think less of anyone! I've had the wonderful privilege of attending schools that, among other things, taught me to be bilingual by age 17, provided me with credentials to succeed in our capitalist society, and, most importantly, taught me to honor and respect all cultures. I love people, especially those who would rather forsake their roots in their home country to come to America for a better life. That's courage. I salute those people. I live paycheck to paycheck, and yet I still feel privileged. And I will never complain that a portion of my taxes are helping these immigrants in their quest for better lives. Or that my liberty is somehow compromised because the government or corporations offer accessible services to people who struggle with English. And to issue a blanket statement that current immigrants, or Hispanic people, are too lazy to learn English is completely ignorant and, yes, racist.

...kind of mundane as to native vs. immigrant, but Ms Savastio is right:"Everyone who lives in the United States, except for Native Americans, is an immigrant."

...as for: "Most countries who have an "official" language use the INDIGENOUS language of the original people.". . .if I recall, the Romans conquered the Latins, then adapted their language. . .Even with the development of English(England) which presupposes the concept of sovereign entity(when and what encompassed England). . .there's questionable etymological origins of our language which if you read English writings of the 18th Century, spells and pronounces words differently than today ?

Yes, I must deal with spanish speakers who make no effort whatsoever to learn any English at all. In fact most of them can't even recite their address. They just stand there like morons, while I am trying to communicate with them. I'm so glad you live in a bubble where you don't have to deal with them. Wish I did too!

Everyone on here who wants the illegals to leave, stop using a lawn service, stop using contractors or roofers. Mow your own darn lawn. You don't want illegals in restaurants, tell your children to get off their duffs and work in those restaurants for minimum wage. Tell your children to go out and pick the crops. See how that works for you.

The people complaining helped create the problem. You want to pay six bucks for a big mac have at it. You want to pay more for everything? Without the illegals you will.

Be careful what you wish for.

To whoever on here stated that he/she didn't like the illegals because they were taking money from a relative's medicaid, well, that says it all doesn't it.

Illegals that work for big corporations actually pay into SS, but as it is under phony SS #'s, they will never see that money. So, in actuality, it's more for the rest of us.

Laura you don't really think the lawn services, farms and contractors are withholding income tax, FICA, SUI, SDI from their laborers, do you? I'm tired of hearing that legal residents won't do these jobs. Fact is they can't afford to do these jobs because the illegals can do them for half the price and still walk away with the same take home pay.
Six bucks for a big mac is nothing compared to what I'm paying now to have all the extra ESL teachers and assistants to translate during class in my school district.
The solution to the problem is to make all the illegal immigrants legal ASAP. Half will go home on their own because they won't be able to afford to stay and the half that stay will at least be paying into all the systems they're taking out of.

@Laura Ok, I or someone in the else in my house already mows my lawn. Restaurant kitchens are dirty so I rarely eat out. I cannot stand the taste of McDonald’s food - it is all garbage. So please send all the illegals packing, it will not affect me. You do not need to carry on with your dramatics – I do not use illegals. I had a contractor use illegals at my home and I promptly fired the service.

But honey, I do suggest you learn a bit. Your illegals will later hire an attorney so they can collect that SS money – they are already doing it and collecting. Of course, many of your illegals do not pay because they get paid in cash.

As far as you not caring about American citizens facing cuts to pay for welfare for illegals, I will be happy the day you find out that you or your family cannot get Medicare because the system went broke paying for your illegals. You are amazing babe; you cry for illegals but turn your back on your fellow citizens. You are a major hypocrite but you knew that. They all say it behind your back.

Because people like you are CHEAP! I have and will continue to pay more when I know that 1. something is made in the usa. 2. legal citizens are working there. It's a no brainer. It's people like you who are killing our economy because you want everything as cheap as possible. why don't you move to china so you can work for 2.00 an hour!

I am bilingual and speak spanish because of my work. By putting everything in english and spanish you are encouraging people not to learn our language. Because the children of these non-english speaking people go to school, tremendous amounts of our tax dollars are used to educate them, also, in their native language. Now how is that helping them? Our schools are "dumbing down" and hurting other children because rescources are used for illegals. Many children can't read or write script, they arn't teaching it. Mabe you do not think it's bad but guess what, they can't read many of our historical documents, including our constitution. In most cases, illegals are not paying taxes, are living in substandard conditions, do not get proper medical care. That's why many of the diseases that were eradicated decades ago are back, like TB, measles and whooping cough. Illegals are just wrong, if they want to come to America they need to do it the right way, the way my parents and grandparents did. I don't care how much of a majority they are. It has to stop.

Yet when immigrants -- legal or illegal -- come to the U.S. and make those demands, I'm racist if I even question it.

According to http://cogsci.indiana.edu/farg/rehling/nativeAm/ling.html:
A common misconception is that there was one Native American language. In reality, there were perhaps a thousand languages spoken in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans - about 250 in the present territory of the United States alone. In addition, these languages showed tremendous variety between one another. A trio of individuals from three areas a hundred miles apart might very likely have been completely unable to communicate by speech. There was, however, a sign language used in some areas to allow communication between those of different tribes. This is described in detail in William Clark's book, "The Indian Sign Language".

Can anybody read? I said large corporations not mom and pop lawn services (ie wendys, mcdonalds, taco bell) for fake ss#s. Restaurants are minimum wage. That's not going to change. Profit margin is slim.

I'm more worried about the banks manipulating interest rates. I've just accepted the fact that we would never be able to deport 12 million people. I prefer to buy American. It's almost impossible to do. Find a product made in the US in Walmart or target. You can't. Nothing we do is going to change that. Corporations find the cheapest way to make a profit. That's the bottom line.

Why do you think Little Italy or China town spring up years ago? People didn't want to assimilate. It's human nature.

I fully support the rights of immigrants to work in this country. After all arent they only doing what our ancestors did? They are here seeking opportunity, better jobs, and a good life for their families. Sounds pretty familiar to me. The majority of the money that is made is sent back to their home country to provide for their families back there. Isnt providing for your family, at all cost, a value we should be teaching our children? Ocean City functions on the backs of immigrants and I commend them for the hard work they do everyday. Ocean City is a better place because of them. One day hopfully they will obtain the same rights to citizenship as our ancestors were afforded. That is the message that I teach my students (your kids) whenever I get the chance. After all a little compasion for the human race never hurt anyone, even if they do speak spanish.

@Rebecca, you sure bought lock, stock and barrel the left wing pity the poor immigrant story. You have not overlooked any of the tired but meaningless clichés.

Everyday Americans do not tell employers to hire. Employers hire workers as cheaply as they can. Given the choice of paying an American worker and those payroll taxes or higher an illegal for cash, of course the employer will hire the cheaper illegal. But that does not make it right. What happens to that American who loses his or her job so the employer can hire a cheaper illegal? Oh, you do not care.
Just for the record I just fired a contractor for sending illegals to my home. Unlike you, I care that too many Americans cannot find jobs and are losing their homes and families. Oh, you do not care. You are beholden to tired clichés to care that record numbers of Americans do not have jobs. You will the day it is your turn to lose your job to an illegal.

Rebecca Savastio

And who is hiring the illegal people? AMERICANS. And, yes, I view all people with humanity, diginity and compassion. I don't view an "us" and a "them" because we are all one race which the human race and we all have the same struggles and desires. Just because someone was born in the same place as me does not make me feel more or less aligned with them as a human being. Every human being is equal and has the right to fight for life and for their family. Every person is equal in my eyes and it is impossible to say that one person has more rights than another person to survive. If Americans didn't hire in order to meet the DEMANDS of the AMERICAN consumers, then we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Rant about the morals and values of life diminishing by the minute with the music and movies we listen and watch. Rant about the cost of living that's forever increasing as simple as paying your property taxes. Rant about all the jobs that's going overseas. @Rebecca, sorry but please try saying "I don't differentiate them by where they were born" a half dozen times without sounding phony. It cannot be done.

Easiest thing you can do to make more money and have job security...learn Spanish or Chinese or Japanese, or some other language aside from English. That's a marketable skill in a global economy, that's a valuable asset to an employer. Language skills separate a person from the pack going after the same job.

And you don't have to go to Harvard or Yale, the local CC's offer these courses and do a good job. And they're affordable.

But Americans are too lazy, they'd have to miss their stories if they undertook such a lucrative step to improve their lives.

So instead they complain, whine, blame, rant. Because it's easy.

Well said Porter. Unfortunately, some English speakers on this page are too lazy to learn another language.

Hey look, we're all descendants of immigrants...and compared to them, we're all as soft as cookie dough.

When we talk about our grandparents and great-grandparents that came over here there is one central theme - they rolled with the punches and constantly adapted to a changing world in order to build a better life for themselves. That's why they got on the boat to begin with. There was nothing they wouldn't do to succeed, no hardship they wouldn't suffer in order to attain their goals.

Too bad that many on this board that cite such examples miss that point, choosing instead to call it a day in the face of a changing world.

When does Patch decide enough comments? This issue has been hashed and rehashed and the comments on local articles are obliterated by those from this article. I took a 2 day Patch break hoping it would calm down, but to no avail.

Good evening Monk. Your desciption of what these comments are doing is better than mine. Wow, we have found common ground on something. Maybe there is hope for Washington. I think the reply to my comment from rice kinds of sums up the ignorance of many of these posters. I stopped reading when i saw people referencing their Pilgrim ancestors and lost plum pancake recipes. I thought that crap was for Facebook. But don't worry, I have a plan. And to all you haters on here, as Monk knows I'm retired with plenty of time. I intend to use that time to nightly "flag as inappropriate" the vile and hate. You can get reinstated every morning, but at least it will be an inconvenience. Maybe then Patch will tighten up their standards or stop this state-wide nonsense. Sleep tight haters. :)

Hi, Pointy Hat. I'm glad we agreed on something, too. Have a good weekend.

In 1944 my uncle broke the law. A US citizen and son of Mexican immigrant stole the identity of his older brother. At the age 16 he insisted in the navy. He stayed in the service for 20 years.

I would hope that everyone comes here legally and obeys the law, but some times people do a wrong thing for right reasons.

Please, lets get real! Ask any teenager, especially in this town, if they want to work in Mcdonalds, mow lawns, paint homes, babysit YOUR toddlers and clean your homes, They dont want to ! Its hard enought to get them to get off the internet and read a book during the summer! Immigrants do not take jobs away from Americans! Please stop deluding yourself to justify your bigotry, Immigrants whether from South America, Haitis, Asia, work harder than Americans and you know it. If Americans wanted to work these jobs, they wouldnt be available for Immigrants, I hate to even use that term, we all have come from Immigrants. If you dont want to support them, do your own lawn, watch your own kids, cook your own food!

The reality is that employers don't want to pay, so the illegals take the jobs for the low pay they offer as no questions are asked and they don't need proper ID.

Thats not the point. The point is that its illegal to knowingly hire any illegal. You will get caught, you will be fined and you may go to jail

Jersey Girl, I bet you are real proud of yourself for using every tired unproven cliché from the sainted defenders of illegals society. Too bad you posted misinformation and lies and no facts.

By the way, I come from my parents who were Americans. And my parents come from parents that were Americans. I am native to this country having been born here. I am not an immigrant. Your we are all immigrants argument is silly. Outside of Africa, everyone is an immigrant by your definition. Immigrant refers to the person and not the DNA. Get over it; check your Funk & Wagnall’s.

Just a little info: Those from India and Asia may come here legally on a work permit but a substantial amount of them overstay their work visa and are, thus, illegal. They don't bother to renew it or go back to their country. They just stay.

RIC,
Really no facts and lies. I didn't quote Fox News. Really, you are a pure American. I did not realize your an American Indian. You definitely been smoken the the funky peace pipe, with residue. I was born in this country as was my parents but like your family, we all eventually came from another country. You must have studied history in Texas with their rewritten facts on reality. You would fit in fine. Immigrant does refer to a person as you correctly quoted in your responce, when was the last time you saw DNA in an immigration office. All Humans share most of the same DNA, unlike you becaue your SPECIAL. Your a PURE AMERICAN not one of those lesser immigrants.Get over it quit the KKK and NEO NAZI chapters your in and see reality.

@george - Grow up and stop being an idiot for once your life. You cannot even debate like a man. When a fool like you starts to claim others are KKK or Neo Nazi, it shows that you have lost the debate. You only do that because you cannot support your view with the truth. So good night, good bye and start taking lessons on becoming a man.

Ric,
Talk about a big meow meow, youwant to talk about facts or continue with your narrow minded rhetoric. I give you a point of view based on reality. I admit i'm from an immagrant family like you but you can't even admit that . It's you who needs to grow a pair. I admit that immigrants in this country are decent HUMAN beings. You can't because you have to grow up and see reality, not listen extensively to recordings of mein kampf while sucking your thumb to go to sleep at night. Listen and listen good pussy boy, Grow up and join the progressive movement because you narrow minded idiots are a dying breed soon to be gone. Us immigrants will be the majority very soon , thank god.

The first paragraph explains why I'm not fond of the speak English because it is the language of America argument.

Google "welsh knot" to see how the English treated the Welsh.

Language control is imperialism 101.
