The Safety 1st toilet and cabinet locks were sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond, Burlington Coat Factory, Home Depot, Target and Walmart.
Hundreds of thousands of child safety locks are being recalled because they can fail, exposing children to dangerous situations. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, in cooperation with Dorel Juvenile Group, Thursday announced a voluntary recall of about 183,000 toilet locks and 685,000 cabinet locks. Young children can unexpectedly disengage the toilet locks and gain access to water in the toilet, posing the risk of drowning, according to the CPSC, and the cabinet locks are being recalled because young children can disengage the lock, posing the risk of injury from dangerous or unsafe items stored in the cabinet. Have you had issues with these locks or others not working? Tell us in the comments below. Consumers …

UPDATE: Council votes for preliminary approval for second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m.
Point Beach council voted on Tuesday night for bars in the area to close at midnight, two hours earlier than the current 2 a.m. closing time. The ordinance, passed with a 3-3 vote with a tie breaker vote for the ordinance by the mayor, goes into effect on July 1. The council also voted for preliminary approval for a second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m., which is the current closing time. However, councilmembers agreed to postpone the deadline for bars to request a later closing time from the town. That deadline had been May 24 but was moved to June 25. The state Department of Community Affairs wrote a letter to Mayor Vincent Barrella saying "it appears" the ordinance regarding fees "may be unlawful…

A state legislative committee approved a bill this week that would bar the practice.
Can an employer force you to reveal your Facebook or other social media password as a condition for getting hired or keeping your job? That issue began to get some attention in March after a statistician in New York reported that during an interview with a potential employer, the woman interviewing him had searched for his Facebook and, upon discovering that it was private, asked him for the password. The statistician, Justin Bassett, refused and left the interview according to the Associated Press. But the story brought to light other instances where employers have sought similar access to social media accounts, and have led several states to consider legislation to ban the practice. California's assembly voted Thursday to approve such …

Dr. Marc Weber, a dentist who practiced in Manalapan Township, has had his license revoked due to fraudulent and negligent practices.
Manalapan dentist Dr. Marc Weber, 45, has had his license revoked by the State Board of Dentistry after negligence, professional misconduct and fraud in treating his patients was discovered, according to the New Jersey Attorney General's office. Last week, the Board decided to revoke the license because he "committed gross negligence by failing to take readable x-rays, failing to diagnose decay, 'treating' healthy teeth that did not need dental work and other inappropriate actions contrary to accepted standards of care," a release issued by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General said. Weber, who has previously practiced dentistry in Red Bank, also engaged in fraud and malpractice by improperly directing patients to companies that …

Wally Tunison of The Bicycle Hub in Marlboro has some tips for bicycle riders.
May is National Bicycle Month, but Wally Tunison, owner of The Bicycle Hub in Marlboro, wants this to be a month that sparks 365 days of riding. "We encourage people to ride their bikes 365 days a year, and not wait for the 30 days in May," he said. But for those who haven't pumped up their wheels in a while, Tunison said May is a month surrounding a national effort to rediscover your inner child's love of biking. National Bicycle Month began about 20 years ago, promoted by independent bicycle dealers like The Bicycle Hub. "We recommend you start off easy. Wear your helmet, and if you are unsure about your bicycle's condition, take it to any independent bicycle dealer near your home," he said. Tunison said this is the time of year bike …

Local gifts and services that say, "I love you, Mom."
You could just say it - "Thanks, Mom, for enduring 96 tee-ball and softball games, making 292 excruciating rides to the mall for me and my immature friends, and for expertly masking your tears and fears when you kicked me out of the nest." Or, "Thanks, honey, for all those sleepless nights and toddler meltdowns you endure and for not running away like Thelma and Louise." But that's quite a mouthful. Instead we thought some gift suggestions might help you say all those nice things a little better. And to make sure we were on target, we asked some local moms how they would like to be loved through gifts. Here are the results: If mom looks tired, it's because she is. They are a tradition for a reason... Not flowers, but sweet smelling just …
More than 60 products often bought during the summer months will not rise in price at Wegmans.
Wegmans Supermarket will be freezing prices on over 60 products which families buy most often during the summer. The price freeze went into effect on Sunday, April 29 and will last through Saturday, Aug. 25. Even if the retail prices of these products rise, Wegmans will not increase their prices during this period. “People are more hopeful about the economy, but gas prices remain a huge concern,” Wegmans President Colleen Wegman said. “Customers have told us that it gives them peace of mind to know that prices won’t change for an extended period of time. It helps with planning and budgeting, and they are saving enough on groceries to more than offset the extra they are paying at the fuel pump.” The list of 62 products that Wegmans will …

But how will local wine stores fare?
On May 1, it became legal for wineries of a certain size to direct ship wine to New Jersey costumers. It's great news for New Jersey wine growers, but perhaps not so great for local wine shops. The fear of opponents to the new law — signed by Gov. Christie on January 17 — is that direct shipping will erode sales of wine in local retail shops around the state, potentially hurting local business and costing local jobs. A major opponent of the bill that allowed direct shipping was Assemblyman John Cryan (D-Union), whose family owns Cryan's tavern in South Orange. In an Op-Ed piece on newjerseynewsroom.com, Cryan explained that he supported an alternative bill that he felt would not threaten local shops: I sponsored the Assembly bill that …
