Have a question for the Mayor? Patch will get it answered for you!
Manalapan Patch is launching a new feature: Names in the News. Our goal with the feature is to give our users a chance to ask questions of decision-makers, business leaders and volunteers, to find out who they are and what they are thinking. Periodically, we will be reaching out to our users with a suggested "Names in the News" candidate and a call for questions. We will then compile the questions, edit them, add some of our own and then pose them to the people you need to know better. Our first Names in the News feature will be on Manalapan Township Mayor Susan Cohen! Have a question for Mayor Cohen, but been too busy to make it to the Township Committee meetings at Town Hall? NJ’s governor and Cory Booker channel Seinfeld in video parody for correspondents show.
Just because they're the state's two most prominent politicians doesn't mean they don't have a sense of humor. The office of Gov. Chris Christie yesterday released a lighthearted video co-starring Newark Mayor Cory Booker as a peripatetic go-to guy, riffing off his now national-scale image as a man of action following his rescue of a neighbor from a burning building several weeks ago. As the Democratic mayor of the state's largest city is depicted doing everything from coming up with a spare guitar for Bruce Springsteen to catching a falling baby, a faux-frustrated Christie hisses "Booker!" The video was produced for the New Jersey Press Association's Legislative Correspondents Club show.
UPDATE: Council votes for preliminary approval for second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m.
Point Beach council voted on Tuesday night for bars in the area to close at midnight, two hours earlier than the current 2 a.m. closing time. The ordinance, passed with a 3-3 vote with a tie breaker vote for the ordinance by the mayor, goes into effect on July 1. The council also voted for preliminary approval for a second ordinance giving bars the option to pay fees to stay open until 2 a.m., which is the current closing time. However, councilmembers agreed to postpone the deadline for bars to request a later closing time from the town. That deadline had been May 24 but was moved to June 25. The state Department of Community Affairs wrote a letter to Mayor Vincent Barrella saying "it appears" the ordinance regarding fees "may be unlawful…

The budget sees a $0.06 increase in the tax rate since last year.
Last week, the Manalapan Township Committee officially adopted their 2012 budget which has a tax rate of $0.0339 per every $100 assessed value. Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen said that a lot of time was spent on the budget and the township looked at lowering the budget even further, but Chief Financial Officer Patricia Addario and the Finance Committee were not comfortable with significantly lowering the budget. Therefore, the budget that was adopted by the Township Committee was the same budget that was introduced last month: a $651,082.03 budget that cut spending by 2.1 percent and a tax levy that increases by $0.06 since 2011. “Except for the public comment here, I have not received any phone calls, e-mails or any comments regarding our …
The County Democratic Chairman candidate has chosen former Manalapan Mayor Rebecca Aaronson as his running mate.
Former Manalapan Mayor Rebecca Aaronson will join Marlboro Councilman Frank LaRocca on his campaign to become the Monmouth County Democratic Chairman. LaRocca announced his campaign in February, following the announcement of current chairman Vic Scudiery's retirement. LaRocca is running against Long Branch Democrat Vin Gopal, who had an unsuccessful run for the state legislature last year. Aaronson ran an unsuccessful campaign for Monmouth County Freeholder in 2005, losing the spot to current Freeholder Lillian Burry. In the interim, Aaronson has volunteered Monmouth County’s battered women’s shelter and has been honored by the Latino American Association of Monmouth County for her public service. Freeholder board resolution opposes reinstatement of tax on those who work but don’t live in New York City.
Members of the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders voiced opposition to any reinstatement of a tax on those who work in New York City but aren't residents. The freeholder board unanimously passed a resolution during its regular meeting in Freehold on Thursday, May 10 opposing the commuter tax. The vote came in response to reports that Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer wants the New York State Legislature to pass the tax, which was eliminated in 1999 after 33 years on the books. “This just shows mismanagement on the city of New York that they can just go and try to grab a tax dollar from anyone. Unfortunately, We have over 24,000 people from Monmouth County who commute to the city and we need to do everything we possibly …
Republican legislators propose naming a highway in northwestern New Jersey for the nation's 40th president.
"The Great Communicator" may soon have a stretch of New Jersey highway named after him. Under a bill introduced earlier this year by Republican legislators in the Deomcrat-controlled Assembly, the late President Ronald Reagan would have a state highway in northwestern New Jersey named in his honor, according to a Newark Star-Ledger article. Only one former president — Warren Harding — has received such as an accolade in New Jersey, with a 4-mile section of Route 48 in Salem County named in his honor, according to the article. If approved by the state Assembly and Senate, and then signed by Gov. Christopher J. Christie, the proposed legislation would designate Route 15, a 19.5-mile state highway in northwestern New Jersey, as the "Ronald…

Dr. Marc Weber, a dentist who practiced in Manalapan Township, has had his license revoked due to fraudulent and negligent practices.
Manalapan dentist Dr. Marc Weber, 45, has had his license revoked by the State Board of Dentistry after negligence, professional misconduct and fraud in treating his patients was discovered, according to the New Jersey Attorney General's office. Last week, the Board decided to revoke the license because he "committed gross negligence by failing to take readable x-rays, failing to diagnose decay, 'treating' healthy teeth that did not need dental work and other inappropriate actions contrary to accepted standards of care," a release issued by the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General said. Weber, who has previously practiced dentistry in Red Bank, also engaged in fraud and malpractice by improperly directing patients to companies that …
