5 Things to Know Today in Manalapan: June 1, 2012

1. Warm and Sunny: Today will be partly sunny with a high around 76 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, there will be a 70 percent chance of rain with between 1 to 2 inches of new rainfall collecting. The low today will be around 63.

3. Donut Day: The first Friday in June is National Donut Day! That’s right, this National holiday was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to commemorate the women who served donuts to the soldiers throughout World War I. 

Now, any day that celebrates the wonderfulness of a deep fried and sweetened circle of dough is a great day in my book! And, I don’t know about you, but I am going to honor this holiday and indulge in a donut. I mean, if I didn’t that would be un-American, right?

 

 

4. :  A grief counseling program, entitled “The Mourning After”, will be taking place at the Center Players, located at 35 South St. in Freehold at 11:30 a.m. today. This free program helps people who have recently, or not-so-recently, suffered the loss of a loved one and are struggling with coping. The class is led by two licensed professional counselors. New attendees should call 732-577-1076 in advance.
 

 

 

5. Hurricane Season Begins: The first of June means it’s the first day of the Hurricane Season. The New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness Director and New Jersey State Police Superintendent have announced that some new changes will be taking place in hurricane preparedness this year.
