1. Here comes the sun. . . finally! Today will be mostly sunny with a high in the mid 60s and a northwest wind around 10 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, expect mostly clear skies becoming partly cloudy over time. Low tonight will be in the 40s with north winds between 5 and 10 miles per hour.

  • Today is the last day of the  at the library. Still not prepared for Tax Day? Hurry down to the library from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today for free income tax preparation provided by AARP volunteers. Help is first come, first served with a limited number of returns prepared during each session. 
  • The Headquarters Book Group, led by Pat Whitehead, discusses The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. The book is about a woman whose cells were taken from her in the 1950s and used for scientific research without her knowledge of it. The book group meets today from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
  • In honor of the Civil War's Sesquicentennial, the library is having a special showing of the film Glory today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The 1989 movie recounts the story of the Civil War's first all black regiment led by white commander Colonel Robert Gould Shaw. Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman, the film was nominated for 3 Academy Awards. While the film is educational, keep in mind that it is rated R -- so keep the kids at home!
  • Bring your child (from kindergarten and up) to create fluttering butterflies during craft time today from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. Registration required, call 732-431-7226 for availability.
  • As part of the Civil War's Sesquicentennial Commemoration, the library is holding a seminar on the Irish participation in the Civil War. Irish in the U.S. Civil War: Glas, Gorm's Liath (or Green, Blue & Grey) is taking place today from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Storyteller, teacher, and lecturer Michael O'Mallie of Claddagh na nGael, a new Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann Branch (CCÉ) promoting Irish music and culture in the central and shore areas of New Jersey is presenting the program.

 

4. High School Sports: Here is a list of the Manalapan High School games taking place this afternoon. 

Home games:

  • Boys Varsity Golf vs. Freehold Township High School at tee off at 3:30 p.m.
  • Girls Varsity Softball vs. Freehold Township High School starts at 3:45 p.m.
  • Boys Varsity Tennis vs. Marlboro High School hit the courts at 3:45 p.m.
  • Girls Freshman Lacrosse vs. Freehold Township High School starts at 4 p.m.

Away games:

  • Boys and Girls Varsity Track vs. Freehold Township High School at 3:45 p.m.
  • Girls Varsity Lacrosse vs. Freehold Township High School at 4 p.m.
  • Girls JV Lacrosse vs. Freehold Township High School at 5:15 p.m.

 

5. Poetry Month: Monmouth University education students will be filming a poetry reading at Lafayette Mills Elementary School today at 4:30 p.m. Several elementary schools will edit the video and show it to students on April 27 in honor of poetry month.
