Five Things to Know Today: Cinco de Mayo Edition

A compilation of the need to know information and events going on in, and around, Manalapan Township.

1. Cinco de Mayo: Happy Cinco de Mayo! Today is a Mexican holiday that commemorates the victory Mexico had over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While not a huge holiday in the country of Mexico itself, the holiday is widely celebrated in the United States and has come to represent a day of honoring Mexican culture and history.  How are you planning to celebrate Cinco de Mayo? 2. Tiempo (weather):  Enjoy partly sunny skies and a high near 64 degrees today. Strong gusts of up to 32 miles per hour are expected, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, the wind calms down, clouds roll in, and the low temperature approaches a chilly 39.

5. Biblioteca del Condado del Monmouth (Monmouth County Library):

  • Learn the ins and outs of researching on the internet to find Web sites, news articles, images and more! Find out basic and advanced search strategies on the most popular search engines. The class will run one hour, followed by 30 minutes of questions, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
  • State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) Volunteer Counselors will answer questions on Medicare, Medicaid, and other insurance and prescription plans from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. No appointment necessary.
  • Books to Wear: Children in grades kindergarten and up can create a book to wear around their necks from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m., in honor of Children's Book Week. 
  • : Come to room 7 to learn how to knit and crochet by Sarita Pathak from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
  • Want to write about your past experiences? Join a panel organized by the Memoir Writing Group to learn about various techniques on how to compile, outline, and write a memoir. All are welcome to attend the panel, which will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
