Five Things to Know Today: Feb. 14, 2012

1. Rain or Snow? Both!: According to the National Weather Service, there is a 20 percent chance of precipitation today - both rain and snow at times. Expect rain mixed with snow before 11 a.m. and than just rain between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The high temperature will reach around 44. Tonight, there is a 20 percent chance of rain after 7 p.m. which may turn to snow after 1 a.m.; low near 32.

2. Valentine’s Day: Happy Valentine’s Day, Manalapan and Englishtown! Valentine’s Day recognizes St. Valentine, who died a martyr on February 14, 269 in Italy. In truth, not much is known about St. Valentine (despite the legends about him performing secret marriage ceremonies for young soldiers who were not allowed to marry), but his name initially became associated with love in Geoffrey Chaucer’s poem “Parliament of Foules”.  Ever since this initial mention, the day evolved into one about lovers and romance.

5. Identity Thefts: Tis’ the season for identity theft! There have been a number of and are urging residents to be careful. Shred all important documents with personal account information before discarding them and be sure to monitor all accounts periodically for suspicious activity.
