Five Things to Know Today: June 8, 2011

1. Hot, hot, hot: Expect a high of 98 in Manalapan today with a heat index as high as 101, according to the National Weather Service. Tonight, the sky remains clear and the temperature drops to 72. 

2. Heat Advisory: A heat advisory is in effect for central and northern New Jersey from noon today, June 8 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, according to the National Weather Service. 

A hot and humid air mass will cause the temperatures to rise to the high 90s, and the combination of heat and humidity can cause heat-induced illness. Please reduce strenuous activity outdoors and drink fluids throughout the day. 

This heat wave could have a heat index value reaching up to 100, which is hazardous to the elderly, sick, children, and pets. Take extreme caution when there is no air conditioning. The most dangerous hours will be in the afternoon and early evening.

3. Air Quality Alert: The Department of Environmental Protection is calling for a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for today within Monmouth County. This means that there will be high concentrations of air pollution in our area today. Children, asthma sufferers, senior citizens, and people who suffer from lung and heart disease should take heed of this warning and limit activity outdoors. 

4. Sustainable Jersey: Manalapan Township is hosting a Sustainable Jersey today from 9 a.m. to noon at the in the courtroom. 

5. Western Monmouth County Newcomers Club : The WMCNC invites all to attend their end of the year banquet, gift auction, and fashion show. The banquet will take place at Park Avenue Bistro at 618 Park Ave. in Freehold at 6:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members; all proceeds will go towards Manna House.
