Five Things You Need to Know Today: June 9, 2011

A compilation of the need to know info and events going on in, and around, Manalapan Township.

Good morning, Manalapan!

1. Early school dismissal reminder: Both Manalapan-Englishtown Regional Schools and Freehold Regional High School District will be dismissing students on a half-day schedule due to the excessive heat forecast. For more information on dismissal schedules for various schools, check out .

2. Hazardous hot weather: The heat wave continues today with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory, effective until 8 p.m., as well as a code orange air quality alert. Today will be a sunny scorcher with a high near 96 with a heat index of around 100. There is a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. There may be some relief at night with a low of 71.

NOAA reminds everyone that in this type of weather, heat illnesses are possible. Try to avoid outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and check on friends and relatives, especially the elderly. Also look out for children and pets.

3. Giddy up! from 12:30 p.m - 2:00 p.m.

The headquarters at 125 Symmes Road will host a line dancing workshop this afternoon. Instructor Leslie Clare will demonstrate line dancing moves, break them down into easy segments and practice  with music.

Dancers are instructed to wear flat, comfortable shoes that will help them move easily on carpet. For more information contact (732) 431-7220.

 

4. at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters. 6:00 - 7:45 p.m.

This event is a two-part yoga workshop designed for cancer survivors of all ages to help them during and after cancer treatments. According to the event description, “These sessions will include breath work and meditation for calming and centering; slow stretches with breathe awareness for releasing the lymphatic congestion; healing and balancing yoga sequences for revitalizing and restoring the body.”
