Kids Pinewood Derby at the Monmouth County Fair

Monmouth Council, Boy Scouts of America invites boys
and girls ages 6-11 to build and decorate their own Pinewood Derby Cars and
participate in the First Annual Kid’s
Pinewood Derby Race,
Sunday, July 28, from 3-6 p.m. at the Monmouth County
Fair, East Freehold Showgrounds,1500 Kozloski Rd, Freehold, NJ.



Cub Scout “Race Pit Crew” members will be on hand to
help children assemble the cars, and Magic Markers will be available to
decorate the cars on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the Outdoor Entertainment Area Tent.  Children are encouraged to bring their own
stickers to decorate the cars.  The cars
will race in heats every 15 minutes from 3:30 – 5:45 p.m. down a high-tech
aluminum track.  This is a “fun” race, no
trophies will be awarded.



Pinewood Derby Car Kits can be purchased at local
Hobby, Craft, or Scout Shops, OR you can purchase a kit for $5 anytime during
the Monmouth County Fair at the Boy Scouts Fair Booth in Tent 1.  Kits include a 7-inch pre-cut pine wedge body,
four wheels and nails. Youth can also race previously built Pinewood Derby Cars
made by themselves, friends, family or other Scouts. Weights are not included
and will not be provided.  Any cars that
use weights will be limited to a maximum of 5 ounces.

There is NO FEE to enter the race, only to purchase
the Car Kit if you don’t already have a car. 
Register for the Race at the Boy
Scouts Booth in Tent 1
, or on the day of the event at the Outdoor Entertainment Area Tent.



At 5 p.m. spectators are encouraged to watch the Monmouth Council Pinewood Derby Race
which will feature the 12 fastest cars built by Cub Scouts across Monmouth
County as they compete for the titles of “Fastest Car” in their division in
Monmouth County.

The Pinewood Derby has been a Cub Scout tradition
since 1952 when Don Murphy a Cubmaster in California created the event to
“…devise a wholesome, constructive activity that would foster a closer
father-son relationship and promote craftsmanship and good sportsmanship
through competition."
