Modern Dagwoods for Today's Dads

Gourmet sandwiches Dad's will love.

"Too few people understand a really good sandwich." ~ James Beard

The word sandwich actually refers to John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich in 1762. He was a free-spirit kind of guy who loved games and gambling. Since he was always in a hurry going from place to place, he never stopped for a full meal. He requested a piece of meat between two slices of bread to eat on the run. Others saw how practical this new way of eating was, and thus the sandwich was born.

Today, there are millions of combinations to choose from. Each sandwich has it’s own tasty personality. Below, I have played matchmaker to Dad and sandwich. Enjoy!

The California Dreamer Dad

This guy is way more comfortable wearing shorts and sandals than a suit and tie. He plays volleyball whenever he can and he loves his kayak. The perfect sandwich for him is The Navajo from The Cheesecake Factory. This sandwich has tender, perfectly seasoned, grilled chicken breast, that is topped with avocado, lettuce, tomato, red onion and mayonnaise, then stuffed into warm, soft, chewy, fry-bread.

The Traditionalist Dad

This dad enjoys the simpler things in life. He would rather be coaching soccer than downloading apps. No fancy aioli spread for this guy. This dad never stops to ask for directions, because he knows the fastest way to get to Brooklyn is to drive to Villabate Pizza & Restaurant. That’s where he orders The Brooklyn Bridge. The magic of this sandwich is the eggplant. Cut so very thin…the way it’s supposed to be, then lightly coated in flour and fried. Topped with a slice of fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, lettuce, and balsamic vinegar. Served in a fresh Italian roll.

The Meat and Potatoes Dad

This beefcake has a sensitive side. When you see him with that faraway look in his eyes, you know he’s waning nostalgic for his mothers pot roast. Quick! Take that man to 25 Burgers. Now don’t let the name fool you. The Pot Roast Burger is NOT a burger…It’s a delectable sandwich. Delicious, tender, slow roasted beef topped with sweet, sautéed onions, cheddar, and zesty horseradish sauce, served on a warm, freshly baked, outrageously yummy, Miami Onion Bun.

The Gardener Dad

His favorite color is green. He has a green thumb and a greenhouse. The Chicken Pesto Panini from The Turning Point features a whole lot of green too. Aromatic, green basil pesto spread and thinly sliced green zucchini, with roasted red peppers, and fresh mozzarella, are all layered on top of a juicy grilled chicken breast.

The Bad Boy Dad

This dad loves two things. He loves you, and he loves bacon. Well, saddle him up because he is in for one hell of a ride! The Smokin’ Cowboy from The Sandwich Station is so bad it‘s good. While we all know that big girls don’t cry…bad boys will come very close to tears when they bite into this fiercely, fiery creation. Boars Head buffalo chicken, pepper jack cheese, and bacon, topped with an excruciatingly scrumptious homemade chipotle sauce. (Add lettuce and tomato for California style.)
