Author of Why I Left the Amish featured at Library Headquarters
Join us at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters for a fascinating author talk by Saloma Miller Furlong, author of Why I Left the Amish and Bonnet Strings: An Amish Woman’s Ties to Two Worlds.
Furlong will discuss her newly-released book, Bonnet Strings, at the Library Headquarters program, which will be held on Saturday, February 22 at 2 p.m. This program is free.
Her first book, Why I Left the Amish, details Furlong’s flight from a strict religious community in search of a life of love and learning. Bonnet Strings: An Amish Woman’s Ties to Two Worlds continues Furlong’s story about leaving behind her Amish community in Ohio at 20 years old and boarding a night train for Vermont, where she knew no one, but found freedom and her future husband.

“I grappled with whether it is possible to have a foot in both worlds, or whether you just have to choose between one or the other. This memoir is about finding that answer for myself,” Furlong said of Bonnet Strings.
Furlong told her story in the PBS American Experience program, “The Amish,” which premiered on February 28, 2012. The program’s sequel, “The Amish: Shunned,” will air on American Experience on February 4, and includes further interviews with Furlong.
