Library Headquarters will host Civil War history afternoon in November

1863 was a year of tumultuous battles and momentous decisions, punctuated at its close by three minutes of immortal eloquence by President Abraham Lincoln.

Authors and living historians will combine history, stories and music to talk about the lessons learned during 1863 – from the Emancipation Proclamation, to decisive battles such as Gettysburg and Vicksburg, to President Lincoln’s enduring Gettysburg Address.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Louis Masur, of Rutgers University and author of Lincoln's Hundred Days, who will talk about how the Emancipation Proclamation came to be and its legacy today.

Lincoln's Hundred Days is the first book to tell the full story of the critical period between September 22, 1862, when Lincoln issued his preliminary Proclamation, and January 1, 1863, when he signed the final, significantly altered, decree.

Masur presents a fresh portrait of Lincoln as a complex figure who worried about, listened to, debated with, prayed for, and even joked with his country, and then followed his conviction in directing America toward a terrifying and thrilling unknown.

In addition, living historian Robert Costello will recite the Gettysburg Address, and will be joined by Mrs. Lincoln during the afternoon.  David Kincaid, a musician and Civil War music scholar, will perform authentic Civil War-era music as The Irish Volunteer.

The afternoon will culminate in a History Fair with living historians and representatives from local historical societies.

Presenters at the History Fair include:

  •     Living historians from the USS Lehigh, Civil War ship.
  •     The Scheier Brothers.
  •     Joe Bilby, author of Remember You Are Jerseymen:  A Military History of New Jersey's Troops in the Civil War and several other Civil War histories.
  •     Dr. David G. Martin, Head of the Education Committee of the NJ Sesquicentennial Commission and the author of over 20 books on the Civil War.
  •     The National Guard Militia Museum of NJ.
  •     The NJ Civil War Heritage Association.
