The Monmouth County Library continues its summer classic theater programs as the Next Stage Ensemble returns to perform Ovid’s Metamophoses in July and Shakespeare’s Henry V in August.

Next Stage Ensemble, a division of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's Summer Professional Training Program, was created to nurture the work of early career actors and to train them in ensemble-based performance techniques. This year marks the 51st anniversary season of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey

On Tuesday, July 9 at 7 p.m., the Ensemble will tackle Greek myths in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, from Ted Hughes’s Tales of Ovid.

How did the world begin? Why does a voice echo back to you when you shout in a canyon? Why do you see your reflection in still water? Does someone control your destiny? In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, the myths of Ancient Greece come vividly to life with a collection of tales of gods and mortals, romance and revenge, hope and rebirth.

On Thursday, August 1 at 7 p.m., Next Stage will perform Shakespeare’s historical masterpiece, Henry V.  Shakespeare’s tale brings history to life in the gripping coming-of-age story of a new king and his nation.

The young and inexperienced Henry V of England, threatened by rebellious nobles and the military might of France, leads a ragtag band of soldiers in a desperate attempt to save his throne and consolidate his power. Shakespeare’s play is a stirring commentary on patriotism, courage and the qualities that make a great leader and nation.

All performances are free and open to the public! Suggested ages are 12 and up.
