THE CASHIER WAS NOT RIGHT THERE! THE CASHIER HAD WALKED AWAY! AGAIN, NO INDICATION THAT THERE WOULD BEA CHARGE FOR ICE!! WHEN HE OFFERED TO PAY, AFTER HE REALIZED HE HAD COMMITTED SUCH A HEINOUS CRIME, THE GUY SHOULD HAVE ACCEPTED AND ENDED IT. MAYBE BRING IT TO THE SCHOOL'S ATTENTION IF HE HAD TO INSIST ON BEING A HARD-ON!
JOE March 02, 2012 at 11:55 PM
HE DID NOT REACH "OVER" A COUNTER! OFFERED TO PAY! AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, WAS NOT!! I REPEAT NOT AGGRESSIVE TOWARDS THE POLICE OFFICERS!! WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHERE U GET UR INFORMATION FROM!!! I DO NOT AGREE WITHH STEALING, BUT I DO AGREE WITH COMMON SENSE AND THAT IS WHAT SHOULD HAVE PREVAILED OF SUCH A MINUTE MISUNDERSTANDING!!! AS A MATTER OF FACT, THE CAFETERIA CAME AT THE STUDENT A LITTLE TO STRONG! MAYBE THAT WAS NOT MENTIONED!!
JOE March 02, 2012 at 11:59 PM
PS - OBVIOUSLY NO NORMAL PERSON BELIEVES STEALING IS ACCEPTABLE!!! YOUR COMMENTS HAVE SHOWN YOU TO HAVE NO FACTS OF THE CASE AND NO COMMON SENSE!!! OF COURSE, WE LIVE IN A PERFECT WORLD SO HIS PHYSICAL APPEARANCE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THESE ALLEGATIONS, RIGHT!!! WAKE UP!!! BETTER YET, GO TO SLEEP BECAUSE U R CLUELESS!!

I have yet to see a formal write up on the police records as to what the formal charges are on this...put aside the fact these articles I have read were from the students stand point only. What is the OFFICIAL story. I saw the video but only of him walking away with CUP in hand, of which I believe the real charges are for. Where is the video of the confrontation or the cashiers story? Until then easy on the caps lock kids, there are no truths to opinions. Anyone with a sane mind knows that.
Christina Warren March 03, 2012 at 01:15 AM
Yes they were. The video shows the kid next to him and even states HE just paid the cashier for product. Inventory (cups) cost money. If you take without paying it is stealing. No matter what is in the cup. Ice or drink. People are so desensitized because they are referring to him stealing ice. But he is clearly taking and admitted he took a CUP. You must be his friend or family I can see why you would want to protect but what he did was wrong. Just my opinion.

To the student...Get a lawyer and sue the college.
Amanda Breaud March 05, 2012 at 02:09 AM
first of all this is completely ridiculous. there are kids at rutgers jumping off bridges for being bullied and the police are doing less about that then they are about a kid taking ice. if it is really that serious i will mail brookdale $2.00 and tell them to keep the change!
Amanda Breaud March 05, 2012 at 02:10 AM
ironic how the lawyer will cost 100 times the amount of the cup of ice..
Amanda Breaud March 05, 2012 at 02:11 AM
no clearly not. ice/water is a life neccessity... it is free at ANY establishment you go to....he was not stealing and anyone with half a brain would clearly see that.
Amanda Breaud March 05, 2012 at 02:14 AM
so they are going to ruin his ENTIRE future because the kid wanted some damn ice? is that serious? and how about all the people that neglect their children and beat their spouses? thats okay cause as a society we take it easy on them cause life is tough but lets throw away an 18 year old's life over some ice! Great Policing and Educational Lessons on Brookdale's part if you ask me -_-
Amanda Breaud March 05, 2012 at 02:15 AM
if i were you id get a giant neon colored poster board and just to be obnoxious put it in front of the ice machine saying "hands off the ice" lol
Kelly March 09, 2012 at 04:58 PM
The kid wasn't ticketed because of the "ice"... he was pulled aside, talked to and had the situation explained to him. Unfortunately, he became aggressive, verbally abusive and combative. Therefore, the Police were called to calm the situation. Again, and unfortunately, he resisted unfavorably - THAT's WHY... he got in trouble!
David March 09, 2012 at 09:25 PM
He was charged with theft. If he had been "aggressive, verbally abusive and combative" he would have been charged with Disorderly Conduct. I know this because I have practiced law in both New York and New Jersey for the last 14 years.

The lawyer for Cedric Calero says authorities on Friday dropped a disorderly persons charge against the 18-year-old freshman at Brookdale Community College in Middletown. http://www.northjersey.com/news/crime_courts/143992326_Ice-theft_charge_dropped_for_NJ_college_student.html

The prisons are filled with young men that become aggressive, verbally abusive and combative when they are caught with their hands in the cookie jar. People that are good with hammers view every problem as a nail. First year of junior college and what has he learned?
JOE March 24, 2012 at 03:14 AM
"aggressive, verbally abusive and combative"??? Do your homework! Were you there? Were they witnesses to this so-called "aggressive behavior"? The answer is no! Is it in the police report? Answer=no! How about the discovery? Answer=no!! Student was not only non-combative, he was surprisingly cooperative, he offered to pay for the cup of ice when he was accused of stealing the drink, but James Episcopia felt the need to play tough-guy cop! Would have loved to see this play out in court! Especially with all these witnesses that saw this aggressive behavior! School officials would NEVER make that up, right? JAMES EPISCOPIA!!! YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, BEING SO ADAMANT ABOUT PRESSING CHARGES OVER A CUP OF ICE!! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO SHOULD BE FACING LEGAL ISSUES IN COURT!! MEANWHILE, YOU COME OUT OF THIS UNSCAVED!! WISH THIS WOULD HAVE GONE TO COURT!! THAT'S QUITE ALRIGHT! KARMA IS A "-----"!
JOE March 24, 2012 at 03:17 AM
I am sure Brookdale had a change of heart and that is why they dropped the charges!! More like, they knew that the student was not gong to be a "lay-down" and was going to fight this since Brookdale had no leg to stand on! They could give two sh*** about the student and care more about their already, severely tarnished image!! Public embarrassment, no witnesses, false comments?? Yeah, I am sure they had a chance in court!
JOE March 24, 2012 at 03:18 AM
Hey Crain! Aggressive towards police officers?? Where do u get your info from?? I would think that MAYBE... MAYBE, that if the student was aggressive or combative this might have been mentioned in the police report or discovery!!
Franken Harpo March 24, 2012 at 11:27 AM
Wow! A tough guy poster complaining about a 'tough-guy' cop. If James Episcopia was here now you wouldn't be pounding the key board with capital letters and you know it. Bottom line...this community college freshman won't be taking a cup of ice without paying for it anymore, eh? I would say he has learned his lesson on how to behave when out in public with law abiding citizens.
Franken Harpo March 24, 2012 at 11:29 AM
What nonsense...next you will be calling for a sign saying "no urinating under the tables' Get real and then finish your education. Thank you.
Franken Harpo March 24, 2012 at 11:48 AM
Calero had a school disciplinary hearing and has to write a two-page essay on why it's important to follow the rules. That is why is it called 'continuing education'.
Franken Harpo March 24, 2012 at 12:06 PM
Brookdale is an open-admission college, available to anyone 18 years of age or older, or anyone who is a high school graduate or holder of an equivalency diploma. Security cameras in the cafeteria. In early 2011, President Peter Burnham and Finance Director George Fehr were suspended without pay pending the outcome of a criminal investigation into allegations of fraud after an annual audit revealed spending irregularities. Burnham subsequently resigned. The criminal investigation is being conducted by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office. Enough said.
Franken Harpo March 24, 2012 at 12:12 PM
A version of the incident citing "interference with a school employee" will still appear on Calero's school record.
JOE March 24, 2012 at 01:56 PM
and your point???
JOE March 25, 2012 at 07:00 PM
And your point?
JOE March 25, 2012 at 07:12 PM
You are correct! I would not be pounding THE KEYBOARD if "he were here"! And James Episcopia is not a cop!! He is the cafeteria manager who was insistent on pressing charges on this misunderstanding! The cause of all of this nonsense and taxpayer dollars being spent! You are also correct that he won't be taking ice anymore!! He didn't need to be charged to "learn his lesson"! He learned of this when Epsicopia came over to him and accused him of stealing!! I would say after he was informed that the cafeteria charges for cups of ice, that was enough for him to realize not to do it again. If he is selling ice, any smart business person would have it listed somewhere for customers to know! Or do you not agree with that? Of course you don't! That would make too much sense! And by the way... a misunderstanding over a cup of ice does not make him a non law abiding citizen!
JOE March 25, 2012 at 07:20 PM
Franken Harpo 7:29 am on Saturday, March 24, 2012 What nonsense...next you will be calling for a sign saying "no urinating under the tables' Get real and then finish your education. Thank you. NONSENSE??? RECOMMENDING THAT YOU POST ON THE MENU THAT THERE IS A CHARGE FOR ICE TO AVOID FUTURE MISUNDERSTANDINGS? I WOULD THINK THAT TO BE A PRETTY GOOD IDEA! AND YOUR "NO URINATING UNDER THE TABLES" COMMENT? REALLY? GREAT IDEA SHOWING PEOPLE ON THIS SITE YOUR LACK OF INTELLIGENCE!! ****!
Franken Harpo March 25, 2012 at 07:22 PM
Point...game...set...match. It's over! The freshman was caught, he told his side to the school's disciplinary committee in closed session, he took responsibility for his misdeed, he had to write a two page composition, his college record will bear the "interference with a school employee" mark and he promised he would never do it again. Currently, he is still allowed in the cafeteria. It is all over except for whining, eh?
JOE March 25, 2012 at 07:31 PM
The only idiot bigger than you, is myself... for getting into some pissing match with some clown that definitely got abused throughout his years in high school!! Enjoy getting your rocks off by commenting on all of your issues online with others!! Dope!

Perfectly natural progression in your emotional development. Your politics and your all capital letter rants don't measure up to debate so you resort to personal attacks and insults. The hubris of the defeated...look it up. I'll be here all week. Better luck in your other relationships.
