Marsala Officially Sworn in as Chief of Police

Marsala's family, friends, and fellow police officers came out to watch his official swearing in ceremony.

At last night’s Township Committee meeting, Manalapan Mayor Susan Cohen officially swore in Christopher Marsala as the new Chief of Police of the .

The first several rows of seats in the courtroom were reserved for Marsala’s family and friends, who came out to to support the officer who began his law enforcement career almost 22 years ago.

The Monmouth County Police & Fire Pipes & Drums band led the ceremony by marching into the courtroom of the while playing a ceremonial song on the bagpipes (click on the video to see the performance). The band is made up of federal, state, county, local law enforcement officers, firemen, and active and former members of the U.S. Military, according to their Web site.  

After the performance, Marsala, 44, approached a podium at the front of the courtroom accompanied by his wife and two sons. With his right hand in the air and his left hand on top of a Bible, Marsala repeated the words of Cohen in an official swearing in ceremony.

Marsala has been received numerous accolades and commendations during his years of service at the Manalapan Police Department. He was named Officer of the Year two years in a row in 1992 and 1993. In 1998, Marsala was promoted to patrol sergeant and was later transferred to the Detective Bureau in 2000. In 2002, Marsala temporarily returned to the patrol unit and became Lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain in 2004 and commanded the Administrative Division until January 2009, when he took control over the Operations Division.

Marsala has lived in Manalapan Township since he was 4-years-old. He attended the local elementary schools and graduated from ; Marsala attended Brookdale Community College, Kean University and Thomas Edison State College and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.
at the their last meeting in April. According to the Township ordinance, only the current police Captain is eligible to become Chief of Police, however the committee was not obligated to promote Marsala because of former Police Chief Louis Moreto’s retirement.
