Police Table of Organization is Revised

A permanent table of organization for the Manalapan Police Department was adopted at the last Township Committee meeting of the year.

The Committee adopted an ordinance that changes the table of organization for the yesterday afternoon, at the last committee meeting of 2011.

The ordinance said that the current number and ranks of police officers will be changed until the following number of police officers holding the ranks mentioned shall exist as authorized by this Permanent Table of Organization of the Police Department.

The Permanent Table of Organization calls for a maximum number of one Chief of Police, two Captains, three Lieutenants, seven Sergeants and 45 patrol officers - for a total of 58 police officers.

Prior to the adoption of this ordinance the total number of police officers was 55. The Table of Organization was as follows: one Chief of Police, two Captains, five Lieutenants, six Sergeants and 41 patrol officers. Thus, the ordinance reduces the number of Lieutenants by two and allows for one more Sergeant and four more patrol officers, permanently.

The ordinance said that the Township prefers to change the policy of the Table of Organization and create a Permanent Table of Organization within the Manalapan Police Department through attrition instead of demoting or laying off police officers.

The ordinance indicates that the Committee still has the power and discretion to demote or layoff any officers if budgetary or economic constraints deem it necessary in order to enforce the Permanent Table of Organization.

This ordinance was introduced at the Dec. 7 Township Committee meeting and the public hearing on it's final adoption was yesterday. No comment was made during the hearing and the ordinance was passed.
