Clark Mills School February Highlights

Check out the school's highlights from February 2013.

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

STARLAB

The STARLAB was used as part of a third grade curriculum-based activity on February 19th and February 20, 2013. The lead teachers for our STARLAB activities were Leigh Pisano and Marissa Diab. They conducted lessons about the Earth’s rotation and revolution and taught the students about constellations. Many thanks to Leigh and Marissa for their continued support of our curriculum and for providing our students with such a wonderful hands-on experience!

During the week of February 4th- 8th, Clark Mills School celebrated Peace Week. Mrs. Cavanagh, our school counselor, planned and coordinated all of the events. She made morning announcements about the character traits, set-up Peace Pals between the staff, and even offered some peace offerings in the office...yummy treats!

The students created peace poems and many of them read them over the PA system. Each class created Valentine’s for seniors at the local assisted living centers. They came out beautiful and put a huge smile on the seniors’ faces! In addition, many of the classes visited our Castle of Good Character corner. There, the teachers read the students a variety of books based on the character trait of the month, caring. What a positive experience for all involved!

Jump Rope For Heart

Mrs. Douglas and Mrs. Byrnes, our physical education teachers, planned and conducted a Jump Rope for Heart celebration on Friday, February 22, 2013, for our 4th and 5th graders in coordination with the American Heart Association. Our fourth and fifth graders raised a large sum of money for The American Heart Association! The students also participated in a variety of stations such as the Long Jump, Chinese Jump Rope, High Jump, DDR and Hula Hoops, to name a few. This was a wonderful culminating activity where our students showcased what they’ve learned in physical education class. Mrs. Douglas and Mrs. Byrnes also put together an amazing video showcasing our students’ talent! What a great way for our teachers to promote a healthy lifestyle!

Read Across America

In conjunction with the nationwide Read Across America Day on March 2nd, we celebrated with an entire week of festivities centered around the love of reading. During the week of February 25- March 1st, each grade level had guest readers throughout the week. Guest readers included grandparents, parents, members of the Manalapan and Englishtown Police Departments, and Mayor Susan Cohen. This week was filled with fun and exciting activities, such as theme days, First Grade Grandparent’s Day, grade 2/4 teacher switch and even a visit from Author, David Adler! Clark Mill’s students also participated in a school wide DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read) on the Reading Train! This week was an absolute sensation, promoting reading by making it fun for all who participated in the festivities.
