FRHSD Offers Workshops Encouraging Parental Involvement

Several upcoming workshops next year aim at getting parents more involved in their child's academics.

The is helping parents support their children as academic learners through a new program entitled 2011-12 Envision: Parent University.

This program is a series of workshops which is intended to encourage families to become more involved in their child's academic success. The workshops will be held at (2 Robertsville Rd., Freehold) from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Jan. 9, Jan. 23, Jan. 30, and Feb. 6. Sharon McCarthy, President of Envision Inc., and a consultant with the Foundation for Educational Administration will run the workshops.

An additional one-hour workshop, entitled "Taking the Lead to Help Your Child Succeed", will be offered on Wednesday, March 21 at (281 Elton Adelphia Rd., Freehold) at 7 p.m. The New Jersey Parent Information Resource Center (NJPIRC) is sponsoring this workshop and encouraging families to attend.

The district is currently working on creating an online video-based parenting education program. The purpose of the videos is to help parents who may not be able to attend workshops due to scheduling conflicts, but want to become more involved in helping their child succeed.

The Active Parenting: Online Video Library will be available online 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Topics that will be covered include:

  • Parenting in the 21st Century:  What’s your style and how does it influence your child?
  • Active Communication:  How to win cooperation with your child
  • Effective Discipline:  How to raise a responsible child
  • Sidestepping the Power Struggle:  Redirecting your child’s misbehavior
  • Building Character, Courage and Self-Esteem in Your Child
  • The Magic of Family Meetings:  Teaching problem-solving and positive values

“Strong connections between the home and the school create a supportive network that benefits the students of the Freehold Regional High School District, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of this invaluable opportunity,” Program Coordinator, Jennifer Sharp said.
