John I. Dawes Early Learning Center January Highlights

Students met Roy the Responsible Rabbit and rang in the Chinese New Year!

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Character Education

The continued its “Paws-itive Behavior Program.” Mrs. Young, the guidance counselor, held mini-assemblies to introduce the kindergarten students to the ELC’s third character critter. The students met Roy the Responsible Rabbit and listened to a story about him. The children learned that being responsible includes the following:

  • Do what you’re supposed to do
  • Keep on trying

  • Help your family and friends

Posters of Roy the Responsible Rabbit and the list of responsible traits are hung around the school. All staff members are reinforcing this trait, and the students are so excited to wear the paw print stickers they receive when they are caught being responsible. We will introduce the next character critter in February.

Chinese New Year Assembly

Suzy Eng, an instructional assistant at the ELC, presented an outstanding assembly on Chinese New Year to our kindergarten students. The children learned about the background of the holiday, as well as the food, clothing, and decorations. She used a variety of authentic props, including a dragon costume. The children were fascinated!
