Lafayette Mills School Highlights from December

Students learn how to surf the internet safely, competed in a spelling bee, celebrated the holidays, and engaged in music.

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Safe Surfing Assembly

On Friday, Dec. 1, a representative from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office presented an assembly on safely surfing the internet. This assembly, for fifth grade students, discussed the importance of following proper etiquette on the web, and it reinforced to students how to navigate cautiously. Most importantly, surfing should be with supervision from parents.

Holiday Fair

The PTA hosted a holiday fair for students on Tuesday, Dec. 13; Thursday, Dec. 15; and Friday, Dec. 16. It was held in front corridor by the Main Office. On the Thursday and Friday dates, students shopped for family and friends during their lunch time.

Students whose parents wanted a retake and students who were absent were provided the opportunity on Thursday, Dec. 8 to have a school picture taken. Teachers and students were provided a schedule in advance in addition to the schedule being broadcast over LMTV.

Spelling Bee

Grades 4 and 5 preliminary and championship competitions took place on Monday, Dec. 5. The school championship was conducted on Friday, Dec. 9. Ms. Klask planned and conducted the competition with a team of Lafayette Mills teachers and a student from Monmouth University also assisted with the final competition. Thank you to the committee – Mrs. Breslow, Ms. Avidon, and Mrs. Umansky for their assistance in the successful implementation of the Spelling Bee. Congratulations to Shelby Eiden, a fifth grade student from Mr. Wildman’s class, who will be moving on to the next level of competition in March at Monmouth University. We wish her the best of luck in her preparations.

Intermediate Band and Orchestra Concert

On Dec. 12, students from Lafayette Mills who participate in the intermediate band and orchestra programs enjoyed a successful concert program with their and peers in front of a packed house at . Mr. Geltch, the band director, and Mrs. Blick, the orchestra director, led students through the final preparations for their concert by taking the students to MEMS that morning for a dress rehearsal where they reviewed through their music, practiced proper performance etiquette, and adjusted to playing on a large stage and under the ambiance of stage lights.

Chorus Sing-a-long

Under the direction of Ms. Fanneron, third, fourth and fifth grade students who participate in the Lafayette Mills Chorus will serenade students and staff by singing a medley of holiday songs. The melodious tunes will reverberate through the hallways during student arrival and prior to morning announcements, thus ushering in the last day of school prior to break with a festive mood.
