The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

NJASK Testing - May 6-May 17

Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 took the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge. This assessment, mandated by the state, assessed students' knowledge of writing, reading, mathematics, and (for grade 4 students only) science. Make-up testing was held the following week for any students who were absent during regular testing.

PTA Plant Sale - May 9 and May 10
The PTA afforded our students the opportunity to purchase flowers for Mother’s Day. The sale was conducted during lunches not to impact instructional time.

AT Convocation
On May 28 and May 29, students in Ms. Guerriero’s, Mrs. Convey’s, and Mrs. Keane’s AT classes collaborated with one another for the 2012-2013 Convocation exercises. AT Convocation was designed with the purpose of fostering higher level, critical thinking skills. Students worked cooperatively in small groups with their peers and with students at other grade levels as a means of further developing and enhancing their social and academic abilities. This year’s task focused on a problem-based learning activity where students were asked to join together as a student-based Character Education Committee representing the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District. Their goal in working together was to utilize their skills in reading, writing, research, speaking, listening, and technology and to develop two final products: 1) a newsletter centered around a specific character trait which could essentially be adopted by schools within the district to promote character education; and 2) a character education newscast about an assigned character trait that could serve as public service announcements, which also could be used throughout the district during the state-mandated Week of Respect.

Sandy Hook Field Trip
On May 29 our fifth grade students attended a field trip to Sandy Hook. The trip is an annual curricular event.

Library Presentation
Each year a representative from Monmouth County Library speaks to our students in grades one through three about the process of obtaining a library card. A representative of the library visited our school on Thursday, May 30th and provided a ten minute presentation to each of the classes. We would like to thank the Library for their continued support of reading.

CAP Program
On May 30 and May 31 the CAP Program took place for students in grades one, four and new students.
