Our students investigated topics of their choice to create websites, performances and exhibits. After months of evaluating primary sources, scheduling interviews with eyewitnesses, and organizing information, they were ready to display their work.

Science Fair

On Saturday, March 16, 2013 the MEMS SITES students from the Lambda, Omega and Sigma communities traveled to Richard Stockton College to participate in this year’s Jersey Shore Science Fair. We are pleased to recognize the following students for their accomplishments. Eleven of our students will be advancing to the Delaware Valley Science Fairs competition in April.

Mrs. Harris's classes studied the life of Jackie Robinson and identified barriers that both Jackie Robinson and each individual student had to overcome. Students learned and defined the 9 values that Jackie lived his life by (Courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence) and then wrote an essay identifying a barrier they have had to overcome and which of the nine values could be applied. Several students then entered their essays into a Scholastic sponsored contest called 'Breaking Barriers' with an opportunity to win a trip to the 2013 MLB All-Star Game, a visit from Sharon Robinson (Jackie Robinson's daughter), and a laptop for both the student and teacher.

Donna Falk's PBL class participated in a Pringles Challenge with the LaBrea Middle School in Ohio. Students created and shipped packages to each other with one potato chip. Winners have the lightest, smallest package with the chip arriving intact. Packages were opened via live skyping classroom to classroom. It was very exciting to "meet" students from across the country.

Counselors Corner

This month the 8th grade Peer Helpers spent organizing and preparing for the March Madness Charity Basketball game. The event took place on March 21 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The turnout was huge with players, spectators, and teachers. Through donations, sponsors, concession sales and ticket sales $1,325 was raised. All profits will go to the 5 charities that the Peer Helpers chose.

The 7th grade Peer Helpers are involved with their own fundraiser through Natures Vision/Uncle Jerry’s Tees. All profits will be donated to various animal and environmental organizations.

This past Sunday, March 17th, was the Central Jersey Intermediate Chorus, String, and Percussion Ensemble Concert at Monroe Township High School. Audrey Chu, an 8th grade student, was selected to perform with the chorus of over 100 singers from different middle schools throughout Central Jersey. The Choir's performance featured three soloists, one of them being Audrey Chu. Congratulations to Audrey on her excellent performance.
