Manalapan-Englishtown Schools Considering Student Uniforms

During the Board of Education meeting Tuesday, the board announced that it will look into a possible uniform code for all district schools. The uniform might consist of khaki pants and polo shirts with different colors and logos, representing each school.

Students in the  Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District might be getting a wardrobe change in the future.

During the Board of Education meeting Tuesday, the board announced that it will look into a possible uniform code for all district schools. The uniform might consist of khaki pants and polo shirts with different colors and logos, representing each school in the district.

Board Member Annamarie Gallante suggested that the sale of uniforms might generate annual revenue for the school and promote discipline among the students. Gallante was a teacher in New York City and witnessed the benefits first-hand.

Superintendent John Marciante Jr. suggested that the Board conduct a survey through the district’s current email to ask the community for their thoughts and feedback on a uniform. The idea has been popular in urban school districts, but not in suburban schools.

“We’d be cutting edge if we did this,” said Marciante, who seemed open to the idea.

Gallante asserted that parents could potentially save money by cutting down on the number of school outfits they purchase for their children during the school year.

“People don’t go to work in sweats and sneakers,” she said, adding that a dress code also promotes equality and self-esteem.

“It doesn’t have to be every day. There can be casual Friday,” added Board Member Brian Graime, to the amusement of his colleagues.

The Board has yet to work out the specific details, including the exact cost of the uniforms and how they would be sold. Formoso asked Gallante and Board Member Diane Bindler to look into these options in the upcoming weeks.
