Manalapan-Englishtown Schools Summer Program to Kick-off Tuesday

Student registration is still open.

Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District is offering a summer program for students in grades one through five. Courses include small group instruction and explorations in mathematics, language arts, reading, and writing.  An academic adventure club for students entering 1st grade and a grade level exploration for students entering 3rd grade is also available.

The summer program is in its first year. Angela Sofia-Mero, Principal of the summer program, said the purpose of the summer program is to maintain and enrich students’ skills.

“We want to improve upon their strengths, and work on their weaknesses,” Mero said, who is a 3rd grade teacher at Milford Brook during the academic school year.

Using a summer atmosphere is a good way to achieve this goal, according to Mero. “[The students] will get an education in a fun, laid back atmosphere,” Mero said. “And we’ll need less review time come September.”

Dr. Joanne Monroe, Assistant Superintendent, said approximately 60 students are enrolled in the summer program, making the average student to teacher ratio 7:1.

“This program gives us the opportunity to provide instruction and enrichment to a number of students who suffer learning loss during the summer,” Monroe said.

Some initially offered classes are cancelled due to lack of enrollment. Monroe attributes this to late planning. Every course that will be offered is still accepting students. A drumming class is tentatively scheduled which will run with the addition of one more student.

Monroe said the district is expected to begin planning next year’s summer program in December.  “We hope it’s very successful this year, so we can offer a more varied program next year.”

Courses are paid for by parents. They cost for classes ranges between $300 and $450. Since funding does not come from the school budget, there is no cost to taxpayers.

Classes will be held at Wemrock Brook from early July to mid-August. Most classes are Monday to Thursday.

Course information is available on the district’s website: www.mers.k12.nj.us  Registration can be found at www.PayForIt.net  Additional questions should be directed to the business office at (732) 786-2500.
