Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School May Highlights

Check out the school's highlights from May 2013.

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

MEMS hosted our regional Battle of the Books competition on Friday, May 3, 2013. We placed 5th in both 7th and 8th grade. Team members were Marziya Khan, Samantha Levy, Alex Purzynski, Brandon Rishi, Simran Tatuskar, Markell Torres, Shania Thomas, and Daniel Ying. Congratulations to all who participated this year!

Students in Ms. Schiano's and Mrs. Ryan's Italian classes participated in a fundraiser for the National Lymphoma and Leukemia Society. They raised over $1,300.00. The winning class was treated to a catered meal by The Olive Garden.

On Tuesday, May 21, fifteen student actors traveled to Rider University to participate in Shakespearience, a Shakespeare Festival. Middle school and high school students from across the state convened to partake in professional acting workshops during the morning, and performed scenes for each other in the afternoon. The Festival requires that groups use true Shakespearean text, but they may "interpret" the text in any way. The Bard and the Bear, MEMS' Shakespearean acting troupe headed by teacher, Donna Breitowich, performed a portion of A Midsummer Night's Dream. The group chose a very unconventional approach to the scene that won them many accolades from the festival judges. As went bid everyone farewell at the end of the day, students from other schools rushed over to praise individual actors' performances. The Bard and the Bears were the only middle school performing that day.

Counselors’ Corner
Seventh grade Peer Helpers covered victims/perpetrators of bullying. The examined characteristics of both and talked about passive, aggressive and assertive behaviors. Eighth grade Peer Helpers covered negotiation skills and how to use these skills with parents, siblings and friends. Teen Talk groups are still going strong in both grades.

MEMS National Junior Honor Society took a trip to Taylor Mills School Friday, May 17, to educate the fifth grade students on the issues of bullying that students face in schools today. The NJHS students created a PowerPoint presentation as well as developed a one hour program that taught the students about the different types of bullying, how to recognize signs of bullying, and what to do if you witness bullying taking place. In each fifth grade classroom, the NJHS students held discussions with the fifth graders and took them through several activities to reinforce the concepts being taught. For example, the NJHS students played "Telephone" with theyoungsters to demonstrate how rumors begin and how they can turn into bullying as the story changes from one person to another. The NJHS students did an exceptional job in their role as both a role model and a teacher.

Sign a Song show featuring Michael Goebel and Joe Oberhuber will be presented on June 14 here at MEMS. The show will feature 3 songs in sign language and the Pledge of Allegiance, under the direction of Kim Weinstock.

Ms. Lawder’s Social Studies students created wonderful informative Colonial Newspapers for New England, Middle and Southern Colonies in Social Studies. Her students will begin presentations for their Founding Father Projects beginning on June 6th. They have been working on this project for the past two marking periods.

On May 14, Spanish students enjoyed a community-wide belated Cinco de Mayo fried ice cream party after learning the historical significance of the holiday and its importance to Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. A good time was had by all. On May 23rd and 24th, all World Language classes, both Spanish and Italian, visited the World Language Fair and viewed projects of cultural and historical significance done by With Distinction and AT With Distinction students.

On May 21, 2013, Ryan Farrell and Amanda Crowe had the distinct pleasure of visiting the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority with 8th grade Science teacher, Jack Poznanski. They were given a wonderful tour of the facilities provided by Robert Smith and Rosemary Filimon. They had the chance of seeing each of the 3 major steps of cleaning wastewater, and the final step of releasing the water back into nature. While the trip was very informative, it was also a lot of fun.
