Milford Brook School April Highlights

Students enjoyed a spring carnival, gazed at the stars, celebrated Earth Day at Great Adventure, and learned about the wild west!

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Popcorn, Cotton Candy and Games Galore!

The Annual Spring Carnival was a tremendous success! The PTA did an excellent job organizing the event to ensure kids of all ages (and their parents too) had a blast. Boardwalk style games like the Ring Toss and Crazy Cans lined our gymnasium along with inflatable attractions like skeet-ball and basketball toss. The children were able to make sand creations as well as spin art. There was plenty of food to please every appetite- sausage, pepper and onion sandwiches, nachos, cotton candy, popcorn, hot dogs, pizza, chicken nuggets, etc. Parent volunteers and our staff helped man the games, amusements and food booths. Who knew Milford Brook could be just as exciting as the Boardwalk at the Jersey Shore?

Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District’s Star Lab comes to Milford Brook

Star gazers gathered in the Milford Brook gymnasium for the Star Lab on April 12th. Third grade teachers, Mrs. Reed and Mr. Jusinksi, did a great job connecting the Star Lab lesson to the recently studied Native American Unit. They captured the students' imagination with Native American stories that used the constellations to explain events that happen in nature. The Star Lab also served as an exciting introduction to our upcoming study of the Solar System in Science. The Third Graders thoroughly enjoyed their "trip" to see the stars!

It’s a Hoedown!

In preparation for Wild West Day, third grade students have been learning and practicing many types of square dancing routines and moves during physical education classes. Mrs. Aikens and Mrs. Regino have introduced students to popular calls such as the Virginia Reel, Dosado and Right Hand Star/Left Hand Star. The third graders also enjoyed more modern forms of line- dance such as “Cotton Eye Joe”. This is an excellent example of how our special subject teachers integrate instruction with that of the classroom teachers, as students are currently learning about US westward expansion.

Fourth Graders Celebrate Earth Day at Six Flags Great Adventure

The day was filled with many educational activities, and the fourth graders learned countless new facts about different animals. Presentations made by Wild Safari staff also reinforced the importance of keeping the Earth clean. Great Adventure teamed up with the Kidsville Newspaper to sponsor a writing contest about saving the Earth. The students could either write a song or a story explaining how they could do their part. Students from school districts across the State of New Jersey participated. Madison Vigdor, from Mrs. Fisher’s class, won first place with her song entitled: “You Ain’t Nothing but a Human,” sung to the tune of the Elvis Presley song: “You Ain’t Nothing but a Hound Dog.” Audrey Vernick, author of So You Want to be a Rock Star, chose Madison’s song as the winner. She won a one-day pass to Great Adventure for each student in her class. This was a great experience for the 4th grade students of Milford Brook as well as an awesome reward for all of their hard work.
