Milford Brook School March Highlights

Check out the school's highlights from March 2013.

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Politician Visit

The short month of March did not stop the staff and students at Milford Brook from accomplishing much! The month kicked off with a very special event on March 4. On this Monday, Assembly Robert Clifton (Legislative District 12) made a visit to the students of Milford Brook School in the Manalapan-Englishtown School District.

Assemblyman Clifton read about the many charitable contributions being made to local communities and felt these students and staff needed special recognition. Inspired by their selflessness, Assemblymen Clifton presented select staff and students with General Assembly Citations for their efforts. In addition, Milford Brook School was recognized with a Joint Legislative Resolution.

The students and staff receiving citations included Ms. Laurie Glass and the Lion’s Pride Club for their holiday food drive; Mrs. Fisher and class for adopting needy families and buying holiday gifts for them; Mrs. Maggiore and class for raising money for a local food bank with the gingerbread house “guess how many candies” contest; Ms. Fischler and class for raising money with a variety of activities for the American Cancer Society; Mr. Fontana and class for their sports-based fundraiser for the American Cancer Society; and student, Kelly McGovern, for her gesture of giving up all of her birthday money to buy presents for a needy family.

The event was attended by Superintendent, Dr. John Marciante; Board Vice President, Dotty Porcaro; Board Member, Joanne Schechter; and many parents and students. Assemblyman Clifton praised students and staff for their civic spirit.

Star Lab

On Wednesday, March 6 first grade students experienced a fun, hands on science lesson about reptiles and the characteristics of living and non-living organisms. Students were able to interact with snakes, lizards, and other animals that helped bring the curriculum to life. Students in third grade experienced the traveling star lab. In the enormous star lab that students crawl into, students were empowered to visually explore the night sky as they discussed astrology, the North Star, the earth’s rotation and more.

Spring Parent Conferences

The month of March also included our spring parent conferences. This was a wonderful opportunity to discuss student growth data with parents, including growth in students’ LinkIt data. In Physical Education, students spent the third week of March in Scooterville! Students learned bicycle and road safety rules and practiced applying these new skills in the gym on their scooters, complete with earning their “driver’s license!” On March 20, students who earned student of the month were celebrated as well. Students rolled into spring recess ready for warm weather and staying committed to reading 30 minutes a night!
