Milford Brook School May Highlights

Students learned about bees, dinosaurs, the wild west, and wowed crowds with their musical talents!

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Field Trips and PTA Cultural Arts Assemblies

First graders traveled to Von Thun’s farm to learn about and study plants on Friday, May 25th. We have many future gardeners and farmers in our midst! Second graders were treated to a fun-filled day with the “Bee Man.” This annual assembly is one of the most highly anticipated events in second grade. The “Bee Man” is a hands-on, interactive experience during which students learn how bees make honey and their impact on our environment. It is a culmination of the study of life cycles.

The PTA sponsored a fifth grade Revolutionary War assembly. Guest speakers brought artifacts such as clothing, dishes and cannons from the 1700’s and demonstrated how colonists used flint rocks to start fires. The students learned about the differences in culture, farming and politics among the thirteen colonies. Fifth graders toured the Sandy Hook Lighthouse and surrounding area learning about its significance in New Jersey history. Students then participated in a beach walk collecting various shells and seined the bay floor using large nets. This annual fifth grade trip offers students a hands-on and interactive discovery of marsh and ocean environments.

Dinosaur and Wild West Days

Second graders assumed the role of archeologists for an exciting and adventurous exploration on Dinosaur Day. Our archeologists found and classified dinosaur fossils and bones while learning about dinosaur characteristics, habitats and physical features. Third graders culminated their study of westward expansion by participating in Wild West Day. Students have been learning about the trials and tribulations of the pioneers as they made their way across the continent in search of new riches and opportunities beyond the Mississippi River. The “young explorers” researched covered wagons as well as designed and played with pioneer toys like the ones children used in the mid 1800’s.

Choir and Instrumental Music Concerts

The beginner and intermediate band and intermediate orchestra performed their spring concert for family members on Monday, May 21st and for their peers on Wednesday, May 23rd. Everyone was amazed by the progress the musicians made since their earlier performances in the winter.

The Choir wowed audiences with their performance of inspiring, popular songs such as “Firework” and “Born this Way.” The choir’s theme was Peace, Love and Music and was chosen to highlight the school’s character education initiative, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?
