Milford Brook School May Highlights

Check out the school's highlights from May 2013.

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Of course the month of May means testing. However, after working hard all year towards mastering the core content standards, students were ready and eager to show all that they have learned. The fifth grade students completed their testing between May 6 and May 9 and the 3rd and 4th grade students completed their testing the 13th through the 16th. I must take a moment to commend students, staff, and parents. Because of your commitment to working together and to raising rigor, students expressed confidence in how they felt about their performance. Great job!

Of course the month of May isn’t all about testing. Mrs. Mucha’s and Mrs. Alboum’s 5th grade class had a special visitor, Susan from Sesame Street. She visited to share with them her life and life lessons! As many of you may remember, Susan played the mother in the Robinson family, a fictional family in the children's television series. The family consisted of husband Gordon, a schoolteacher, and his wife Susan, a nurse. As African-Americans, the family was created as leads for the show, originally targeted to underprivileged inner-city children (and possibly to teach its viewers to be accepting of all races).

All fifth grade students went to Sandy Hook on May 30 or May 31 for hands-on Science lessons that align with the core content standards. Fifth graders also spent much of May exploring poetry and writing their own poetry books. Fourth grade students were also busy writing fables rich with descriptive language while second grade students spent time working on a research report about a famous person who has contributed meaningfully to our society.

Finally, the month closed out with Wild West Day on May 31, a culminating event for third grade students that concludes their unit on Westward Expansion. This unit includes activities like writing from the perspective of a pioneer about what it was like to take a wagon out west, reflecting on what it was like to mine for gold, even researching about the history of the railways in our country. This event brings weeks of exploration about this time to life through its hands-on nature.

Finally, the first graders have been immersed in learning about plants in May. The children were given the opportunity to experience a farm first hand, by visiting Von Thun's Farm on May 24. At the farm, studentstook a tour of a greenhouse to learn about the different types of vegetation they grow. A fun and informative hayride gave the children an opportunity to observe how farmers take care of their land, and observe all the fruits and vegetables that are in the process of growing now. Each child potted a plant that helps to complete an at home project that includes a journal of their plant's growth. A great learning experience was had by all!

In closing, I would like to take a moment to remind everyone that every educational minute we have with our students must be valued and utilized. With school going until June 26th, we must all work together to keep our students focused on their academics until that very last day, OK the second to last day! Thank you for your support!
