Monmouth County Teacher of The Year: Christine Delmas of Wemrock Brook School

Longtime Wemrock Brook School special education teacher Christine Delmas has been named Monmouth County Teacher of the Year. The award automatically puts Delmas in consideration for the New Jersey State Teacher of the Year award. 

“It’s such an honor to receive this honor from Monmouth County,” Delmas said. “The most important people that have helped me reach this point have been my fellow teachers and my amazing students.”

Delmas has been teaching for nine years -- all at Wemrock Brook School. She was named Wemrock Brook's Teacher of the Year in 2010. 

“I always have the desire to learn more,” Delmas said. “Everything can change in an instant. We as teachers here [at Wemrock Brooks School] go from grade-to-grade. If you’re a teacher using the same lesson plans you had 10 years ago, there’s something wrong with your approach.”

Delmas cites becoming a more well-rounded teacher as her main goal, stating it is the only way she can get a greater understanding of her students. 

“I’m really lucky to have learned from such great teachers in various grades,”Delmas says. “The kids we teach are amazing people. But we have to understand them and what they’re going through. People change as do the kids that come through the school doors. Every approach has to be different.”

“Teachers have to find new ways to tap into their potential. Don’t ever feel like you’ve had too much education as a teacher. You should feel like it’s not enough education and never stop learning.”

As for what keeps inspiring her to learn, Delmas says the answer is simple.
“My students are incredible people,” Delmas said. “I get so much out of special education. I’ve had the pleasure of teaching and developing the minds of some of the happiest people. Their passion, their desire to learn, their optimism, and seeing them become better people makes everything I do worth it.”
