Taylor Mills School January Highlights

Students competed in various academic contests, learned about fears, and donated to the Samaritan Center.

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Competitions

Upon returning from Winter Break, our 4th and 5th grade students participated in the National Spelling Bee. In addition, our students entered several other national contests including the National Geography Bee, the Zaner-Bloser Handwriting Contest, and the continuation of the Continental Math League Meets. We are very proud of how well our students did in all of these competitions! Congratulations to Thomas McDade (4th Grade) for being our school Geography Bee Champion and to Joseph Sorrentino (5th Grade) for winning the school-wide Spelling Bee. We wish both of them the best of luck as they move on to the next level of competition.

Face Your Fears

Students also benefitted from a fantastic character education assembly sponsored by our PTA. The assembly, provided by Camfel Productions, presented our students with an important message about moving beyond their fears and their comfort zone to “Dare to Move.” Using popular music, movie clips, and a three screen video format, the simple message of the assembly focused on the reality that many times, in order to make progress and make a difference, it takes courage. We could dare to move forward and challenge our fears, but too often we look for an easy way out because the pressure seems too great. The assembly was designed to encourage students to live their lives to the fullest in spite of their fears. In the end, students gained more confidence to move in the right direction with their lives, taking control of the challenges confronting them on a daily basis. After the assembly, students were encouraged to write down their goals in their assignment pads and “dare to move” to reach their fullest potential every day here at Taylor Mills.

Celebrating Kindness and Donating Food

In other news, our Student Government has been hard at work with our Kindness Week Celebration (Feb 9 – Feb 16) and worked hard collecting for our “Soup-er Bowl” charitable donation drive (Jan 25 –Feb 3). All donations will benefit the Samaritan Center in Englishtown. Over 500 items have been donated so far, but as of the date of this printing we are still expecting a big push to the end zone! Our Taylor Made News Crew has also been hard at work, finishing their FIFTH edition of the newspaper this year! We are so proud of the progress that we have seen in their writing in just a few short months.
