Taylor Mills School May Highlights

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

NJASK

While much of the month was spent on the NJASK testing our 3-5th graders, the highlight of this month was definitely our Student Council driven events. During Staff Appreciation Week, our students created Thank You cards for their teachers to express their gratitude for the many things their teachers do all year long. What a fantastic way to have the students participate in a meaningful surprise for their teachers!

"Be the Change Spirit Week"

During the week of May 21 – 25, students participated in “BE the CHANGE Spirit Week.” Our Student Council selected three charities to support and recognize in several ways throughout the week. The three charities they chose were the American Cancer Society, the National Lupus Foundation, and the Fisher House Foundation (for Veterans). On May 21, students kicked off the week with their School Spirit gear. Our Student Council President and Vice-President began each day by announcing a variety of ways that kids can change their world.

On Tuesday, May 22, our students participated in a “Spirit of Giving Day” designed to encourage students to donate supplies to our troops overseas. All of the supplies were donated to ARMS (American Recreational Military Services) for dissemination. On Wednesday, students wore purple as a show of support for each selected charity. On Thursday, May 24, our students designed CRAZY SOCKS pledging one simple thing they could do to make a difference in our world. The socks are proudly displayed all around the building. On Thursday, students also participated in our annual Fun & Field Day sponsored by the PTA. On Friday, we all wore red, white, and blue to honor our fallen soldiers and those who are still defending our country.

In addition, throughout the week, students donated their spare change in support of the charity of their choice so they could really make a “change.”
Overall, we hope that weeks such as this inspire students to participate in their communities for a good cause, learn to appreciate all of the good things they have, and help those who are less fortunate.

Mahatma Ghandi once told us to “Be the change we want to see in the world.” If we could all think about the many ways that even our children can change the world, we could truly make this world a better place.The generosity and concern for others that our students displayed this week were praiseworthy. It was a fantastic way to end the month and close out a great year for our Student Council.
