Wemrock Brook School March Highlights

Students read Dr. Seuss, learned about many types of music, and studied ancestry for Immigration Day.

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

Read Across America!

What a Seussational kickoff to March, as celebrated Read Across America. Students in each class participated in Seuss Bingo, answering trivia questions. Winning classes received a copy of Dr. Seuss’s Happy Birthday to You!, as Wemrock Brook celebrated its 10th year of educating students under Ms. Martin’s leadership. "Wake Up! For today is your Day of all Days!" Students and staff wore crazy hats to honor Dr. Seuss’s birthday on March 2nd.

First and second graders were treated to a reader’s theater assembly program. Special guests were invited to each classroom to either read books or give book talks throughout the week. And the entire school participated in a Reading Train, as the imaginations of children are ignited when they open up a good book. Likewise, students were very excited to read the Lorax and then watch the movie released on March 2nd. "You're never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child."

Motown Showdown!

“Let's start at the very beginning. A very good place to start. When you read you begin with A-B-C. When you sing you begin with do-re-mi!” Wemrock Brook’s 4th and 5th graders presented Motown Showdown, a talent and entertainment show directed by Mrs. Laurenzano. Students danced, sang, and/or played musical instruments to classics like Dancing in the Street, Stop in the Name of Love, Rockin’ Robin, Respect... and many more honoring Motown hits of the 60’s.

Mozart, Meet the Musician!

“A class in the classics; the great composers brought to life.” Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, played by Dennis Kobray, brought to life a great musical figure from history for the students to meet and get to know. Major events and turning points in Mozart’s life are relived and their effects upon the composer’s music were explained and demonstrated in this most enjoyable assembly. The goal was to educate and entertain, as students listened to the classical music and learned about the life of Mozart. A big thank you to Mrs. Bischof and the PTA for bringing this wonderful assembly to Wemrock Brook students on March 19th.

Immigration Day!

Second grade students designed family trees, wrote country reports, and graphed the history of their ancestors, while studying the immigration unit as part of the social studies curriculum. This study concluded with Immigration Day, where teachers and parent volunteers organized stations for students to relive the Ellis Island experience. Students, from various countries around the world, came dressed to school as immigrants holding their suitcases. They visited the nurse/medical station, were tested in US geography and facts, handed in their papers, and finally got their passports stamped as they pledged allegiance to the United States of America. Second graders then feasted on food from all around the world.
