Wemrock Brook School May Highlights

There was NJASK testing, a spring musical concert, science fair, dino day, math olympics - oh, and the teacher's were recognized too!

The following highlights are submitted by Irene Policastro, the Secretary to Superintendent John J. Marciante of the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District.

NJASK Testing was a Success

Students in grades 3, 4 & 5 participated in the NJASK testing in early May. The NJASK, or the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge, is a standardized test given to students in all of New Jersey’s public schools. Everyone had two days of language arts testing and two days of math testing. The fourth graders had an extra day of testing, and they were asked to assess their skills in the area of science.

The MERS Instrumental Music Department presented a Spring Concert performed by the and Orchestra and Band Students on May 23rd. Renne Cohen, Orchestra Director, will retire at the end of the school year, but her music will live on in her students. The sweet sound of the violins, violas, cellos and bass were played by over 25 eager, hard working students. Mr. Hans Muhler, Band Director, directed over 100 band members. Some of the popular selections were: "Star Wars", "Beethoven’s Ninth" and "We Will Rock You". Congratulations to all our talented performers.

Science Fair

Third graders at Wemrock Brook had the chance to act as scientists and study the scientific method. Teaching the scientific method is critical thinking at its best. Students had the opportunity to be exposed to science vocabulary while exploring age appropriate science wonders. They started with a problem, created a hypothesis, gathered materials, conducted procedures, recorded results and reflected on a conclusion. All the experiments were on display in the cafetorium and parents were invited to attend. This well attended event was a highlight for many of our third graders.

The First Floor Was Shaking Thanks to Dinosaur Day at WB

Second graders were treated to a day of discovery. The Pearl Observatory Dino Assembly was held and students learned the “bare bones” of life for a dinosaur. Dinosaur facts including types, what they eat, and how big or small they were highlighted the day. Stories, crafts and adventure rounded out the day.

Math Olympics

Students in fifth grade participated in an all-day math marathon. Teams competed against each other in games such as: Fraction Zap, Concentration, Skunk and Plunger Man. What a great way to foster a love of math...Congratulations to all of the medal winners!

Teacher Appreciation!

The talented moms of our PTA sponsored a staff luncheon in celebration of Teacher Recognition Day. The food, decorations and atmosphere were a treat for all! Also, each day the PTA recognized the staff with tokens of appreciation. Wouldn’t you like to meet each day with a special treat like a Barnes and Noble gift card in your mailbox? How about candy? It sure did make everyone feel special and so much appreciated.
