Manalapan Scout Among Four to Attain Eagle Rank Through Service Projects

Four members of the St. Rose of Lima Boy Scout Troop 18 attained the Eagle Scout. Rank after completing service projects that have made a difference in the community.

According to a study by the Boy Scouts of America, only 4 percent of scouts attain the Eagle Scout rank.

The Freehold Borough Mayor and Council recognized the four local young men on March 24 at and at their last regular meeting. “Not everyone can become an Eagle Scout. This is quite an accomplishment,” said Councilwoman Sharon Shutzer.

In order to reach the Eagle rank, the scouts had to advance through the ranks of Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star and Life. They served in many leadership positions and received numerous scouting awards. They also had to compete a service project that benefits the community.

Daniel Mahoney, of Manalapan, is a student at . Mahoney refurbished the concession stand at Manalapan High School for his project, which is used to raise funds for scholarships, athletic and academic awards, uniforms and team requests. 

Walter Wissler, of Freehold Township, is a student at . Wissler’s project consisted of building and installing four bat boxes at the . He also designed and built a Shaker Style teacher’s desk for use in the schoolhouse.

John Osborne, of Freehold Township, is a student at . Osborne built 5 radiator covers for the first floor radiators at the in Freehold for his project. He also led a group of scouts and adults in weeding a garden behind the house.

Jacob Resnick, of Freehold Township, is a student at . For his project, Resnick built and installed three benches at the of Monmouth County and installed an information kiosk at the Historic Oakley House.
