Girl and Boy Scouts Revamp Senior Center

Local scouts work to achieve their badges and awards by redecorating the inside and outside of the Manalapan Township Senior Center.

The Girl and Boy Scouts of Manalapan have revamped the . Eagle and Gold Scout projects were the reason behind the renovation, which ultimately gave the center a more welcoming and relaxing quality.

Brian I. McLean created a large coffee bar for the seniors as his project for his Eagle Scout badge. McLean received the granite and cabinetry through outside donations and personally contributed a miniature refrigerator. The new coffee bar is now a safer place to fill up on the caffeine, according to Elaine McNamara, Director of the Manalapan Senior Center. The kitchen, where seniors used to get coffee, easily became crowded.

After grabbing a cup of joe, seniors can walk over to a new library area with new bookshelves made by Kristen Keenan, who constructed the shelves to achieve her Girl Scout Gold Award.

Vernica Perreria and Nicole Tymszak redecorated the game room at the center for their Girls Scout Silver Award. They took a plain room with bare, white walls and converted into a colorful room full of energy and vitality. Now card players can ponder their next move while sitting amongst turquoise walls painted with playing dice and cards.

The exterior of the Senior Center was transformed, as well. Matthew Keenan constructed a new shuffleboard court and Ethan Winters created a pathway from the backyard to the parking lot; both boys’ projects were to achieve their Eagle Scout Awards.

Seniors can enjoy the serene environment of a Zen Garden now, created by Michelle Bogolub for her Gold Award. The garden, in the backyard, is bedecked with rocks, plants, flowers and Chinese letters on the nearby walls. Hanna Bogolub also spruced up the backyard by cleaning up a bridge and landscaping to achieve her Silver Award. Mitchell Bogolub constructed a patio area with benches to barbecue for his Eagle Scout Award. The entire Bogolub family keeps on giving back to the center by barbecuing on a grill donated by Target.

McNamara commended the work of the Girl and Boy Scouts and reported that the projects satisfied the senior citizen’s needs, according to a press release. Usually McNamara turns to the local Girl and Boy Scouts when the center needs some sprucing up as a way to give the scouts opportunities to earn their badges and awards, according to the release, and there are usually projects of various scopes that can be accomplished at the center.
