Salon Cémone Cuts Hair for Autism Awareness

In honor of Autism Awareness month, has been raising money to be donated to Autism Speaks, as well as a local charity that supports it, by selling Autism awareness bracelets and blue hair extensions at a cost of $10. And this Sunday, April 17 Salon Cémone is hosting a  from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

No appointment is necessary on Sunday, April 17 for a haircut or to get a removable blue hair extension. Women's haircuts will cost $20 (an additional $10 for a blowout), men's haircuts cost $15, and children under the age of ten cost $10.

Raffle tickets and baked goods will also be available for purchase.

"One hundred percent of the proceeds from the haircuts will be donated to Autism Speaks and a local charity that supports it," salon owner Sue Bertola-Wolf said. 

Autism Speaks is an organization with the goal "to change the future for all who suffer with autism spectrum disorder," according to charity's mission statement.

Their Web site explains how Autism Speaks funds scientific research on a global scale into discovering the causes, prevention, treatments and cures for autism. The organization also seeks to keep the public informed  about autism and how it effects the sufferers and their family.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, "autism is a developmental disorder that appears in the first 3 years of life, and affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills."

The idea sparked from several hairstylists who felt strongly about the cause and thought a Haircut-A-Thon would be a great idea to promote April as Autism Awareness month, Wolf explained. 

This is the first time Salon Cémone will be holding a Haircut-A-Thon, but probably not the last. 

"I would love to continue this annually," Wolf said.
